In 2025, Barcelona will become home to the first European campus of the University of Hong Kong (HKU). The educational center will be housed in a modern building of nearly 8,500 square meters, located in the innovative 22@ district. The property acquisition deal was the result of cooperation between the university, the city administration, and international real estate experts.
Founded in 1911, HKU is considered the oldest university in Hong Kong. Initially, it specialized in medical education, but today it offers a wide range of programs—from architecture and the arts to engineering, law, and business. However, it is not yet specified which fields will be available at the new Barcelona campus.
The city’s investor relations department oversaw organizational matters related to the opening of the campus. The initial discussions between the parties took place at the Mobile World Congress in early 2025. Ultimately, the university chose Barcelona over Madrid. Municipal specialists assisted with obtaining permits, relocating staff, and other aspects of launching the project. Details regarding the campus’s future activities have not yet been disclosed.
The University of Hong Kong ranks 13th in the Financial Times global business school rankings and is considered a leader in Asia. The new campus building is located on Llacuna Street, designed by architect Víctor Bergnes de las Casas, and constructed by the Bega group. Real estate experts note that this deal strengthens Barcelona’s position as a hub for talent and investment, and reflects the growing interest in office real estate in Spain.
