The Number of Evangelical Churches in Madrid Surpasses Catholic Churches

Why Protestant Communities Are Growing Faster Than Catholic Ones in Spain's Capital – An Unexpected Turn

Madrid is witnessing a rapid increase in evangelical churches. Over the past five years, their number has grown by 62%. Catholic parishes remain unchanged, reshaping the city’s religious landscape.

In recent years, Madrid’s religious landscape has undergone a significant transformation. Where Catholic traditions once prevailed, new Protestant communities are now emerging with increasing frequency. This shift is taking place not in historic cathedrals but in the most unexpected locations — on the outskirts, in industrial areas, in former shops, and even in spaces that until recently were used as warehouses.

Evangelical churches are opening at an impressive rate — roughly once every four days. Over the past five years, their number has grown by 62%, and there are now 1,187 such churches in the capital. By comparison, there are only 481 Catholic parishes in the city, and that number has remained almost unchanged. This means that for every Catholic church, there are now already two Protestant temples.

This shift is primarily linked to the influx of migrants from Latin America. Madrid is becoming not only multilingual but also increasingly diverse spiritually. New churches are appearing where religion had almost vanished — in residential districts, industrial suburbs, and rented spaces. In the evenings, these places fill with music, emotion, and collective enthusiasm. There are no traditional altars or icons here, but instead, there are screens, speakers, and an atmosphere in which faith feels almost tangible.

Services in these churches resemble musical shows more than traditional Mass. People sing, cry, record what’s happening on their phones, and sometimes even broadcast the services on social media. Donations are collected through mobile apps, and promises of healing and support are made loudly and convincingly. For many parishioners, this is not just a religion, but a way to find hope and feel part of a community.

The influence of the Latin American diaspora is especially noticeable. In these new churches, biblical texts blend with salsa rhythms, faith mingles with the desire to survive in a new country. Here, people pray not only for their souls, but also for residence permits, jobs, and their families. For migrants, such communities become a real source of support and a chance to gain confidence in the future.

However, Protestant churches attract not only newcomers. More and more Spaniards, disillusioned with traditional Catholicism or weary of secular indifference, are finding a living faith and a sense of transformation in these new communities. Here, they promise not abstract salvation, but concrete help and change for the better.

Madrid mirrors the path of other metropolises, such as São Paulo, where Protestant churches are also flourishing. A new spiritual connection is being forged between these cities, and the religious map of the world is becoming increasingly diverse and dynamic.

The growth of Protestant communities is not only a religious phenomenon, but also a social one. In times of economic instability and uncertainty, faith becomes a way for many to cope with anxiety and loneliness. Here, confessions are not required and sins are not recalled—it’s enough just to come, sing, support others, and receive support in return.

While Catholic parishes remain unchanged, Protestant churches are expanding into new territories—both physical and emotional. Every few days, a new venue lights up in Madrid, filled with music and words of hope. A city that has witnessed countless historical changes is now experiencing another one—a religious revolution, where faith once again becomes part of everyday life.
