Internal Crisis in Vox: Ortega Smith Loses Ground in Madrid

Why Abascal’s Former Ally Was Sidelined by Vox: Power Struggles, Ambition, and New Political Players

Javier Ortega Smith, a founding member of Vox, has faded into the background after losing key positions. His future in Madrid politics is now uncertain, as the party shifts its focus to a new generation.

A new conflict is brewing in Madrid’s political scene: Javier Ortega Smith, once one of the most influential figures in Vox, finds himself in a difficult position. After being removed from his post as deputy speaker in the Congress of Deputies, his influence within the party has significantly diminished. He now retains only his seat on the city council, but even his closest allies are questioning his future role.

The internal party reshuffle has dealt a real blow to Ortega Smith. His absence from key events attended by Vox leaders has only fueled rumors of a rift with the party leadership. While party leader Santiago Abascal makes a show of keeping his distance from official ceremonies, Ortega Smith continues to appear on stage alongside other party representatives—at odds with the new leadership strategy.

Loss of trust and generational shift

Ortega Smith was once not only a close friend of Abascal, but also one of the party’s symbols. His role in forming the coalition with Partido Popular and Ciudadanos in Madrid was crucial. Now, however, the party is betting on younger politicians like Carlos Querro and Isabel Pérez, who are actively pushing new priorities: migration, the economy, housing, and national identity.

While new faces from Vox are campaigning in southern districts of Madrid, Ortega Smith remains on the sidelines. His participation in events organized by former party members and his public support for criticism of the leadership have only worsened his position. Within the party, many believe his chances of being included in future electoral lists are minimal, and any possible appointment to another region is seen more as a way to keep him under control.

Ortega Smith’s future in doubt

Despite all the challenges, Ortega Smith has not given up hope of retaining his seat on the city council and continuing his political career. However, the final decision will be made by the national executive committee, which may opt for a different candidate for Madrid. His past achievements and personal ties to Abascal could be a factor, but the party is currently clearly focused on renewal and discipline.

Vox believes that success depends not on specific individuals, but on the strength of its brand. That’s why even high-profile figures like Ortega Smith can find themselves taking a back seat. His story is an example of how quickly the political landscape can change, and how hard it is to stay on top without following the party’s new direction.
