Junts Strengthens Political Independence Amid Changes in Catalonia

Catalan party walks a tightrope between conservatives and socialists: how Junts holds onto its power

Junts asserts its independence by distancing itself from the government. The party maneuvers between Catalonia’s political forces, aiming to maintain its key positions.

In recent weeks, Junts has been actively highlighting its independence through bold political moves. Amid significant shifts in Spain’s political landscape, the party is determined to assert its relevance and ensure that neither side sees them as a predictable ally.

A recent move by Junts representatives against Pedro Sánchez’s government was a notable event. The party not only distanced itself from the Socialists but also signaled its openness to negotiations with a range of political forces. This is especially important as the far-right gains ground in the conservative camp and traditional centrist parties continue to lose influence.

After years of political turmoil, Catalonia has entered a period of relative calm. However, Junts is in no rush to relinquish the initiative. The party recognizes that returning to its former role as a moderate right-wing force—as it was under Jordi Pujol—requires skillfully balancing the interests of various groups. On one hand, part of the electorate demands a shift further to the right; on the other, maintaining dialogue with the Socialists is crucial to avoid isolation.

Economic interests and business influence

A key element of Junts’ strategy is its close relationship with Catalonia’s major business community. Despite not controlling the Generalitat, the party remains focused on the interests of the region’s economic elites. The ongoing cooperation between Carles Puigdemont and Josep Sánchez Llibre, head of the Catalan business association, acts as a kind of guarantee that Junts will not stray from a business-friendly course.

The business sector expects flexibility from the party: to either support or block initiatives depending on the circumstances. For example, Junts may oppose coalition partners’ proposals that are deemed too left-wing, or advocate for measures that benefit family businesses and large corporations. This approach allows the party to stay relevant and influential, even without holding formal power.

Political balance and risks

Nevertheless, the current situation is far from ideal for Junts. The lack of control over key institutions limits the party’s ability to act independently. Junts is forced to continually prove its significance—stepping up public statements and showing readiness to negotiate with any of the major players.

At the same time, overly aggressive moves could cost Junts support among both moderate voters and economic partners. The party must carefully navigate between diverse interests to avoid political isolation and preserve its influence on decision-making in Catalonia.

In the coming months, the party will continue to use symbolic gestures and bold statements to strengthen its position. However, the success of this strategy will depend on Junts’ ability to balance voters’ demands with business expectations, as well as their skill in adapting to the rapidly changing political landscape.
