Madrid Investigates Role of Prime Minister’s Wife’s Aide in University Affairs

Scandal surrounding Begoña Gómez escalates – what is hidden in the Civil Guard’s report

Authorities in Madrid are examining the actions of an advisor to Begoña Gómez, linked to securing sponsors for a university department. The case involves senior officials and possible abuse of power. The investigation is ongoing, with details yet to be disclosed.

A new scandal is unfolding in the Spanish capital involving the activities of Begoña Gómez, the wife of the Prime Minister. At the center of the controversy is her adviser, who, according to investigators, played an active role in negotiations with companies that supported a university department at one of the country’s leading institutions.

A document prepared by members of the Civil Guard was submitted to the court in just two days. It details the actions of the aide, who was found to be in contact with representatives of more than a dozen organizations interested in collaborating with the department. Questions have arisen because these initiatives extended beyond her official duties as a civil servant.

The case involves not only the Prime Minister’s wife and her adviser, but also the government representative in Madrid, who previously held a senior position in the administration. The judge overseeing the investigation insisted on receiving the report urgently in order to notify those involved about the possible consideration of the case by a jury. However, only the defense lawyers appeared at the court meeting.

The 34-page report analyzes dozens of emails exchanged between the adviser and the former university vice-rector. The correspondence reveals that the aide handled most of the negotiations regarding funding for the department, established in 2020. Major technology companies are among the sponsors, as well as other organizations interested in joint projects.

The report also mentions other actions by the adviser that are not directly related to finding sponsors. These include consulting on salaries for non-staff employees, organizing scientific events, and requests for meetings with the university’s legal department. Meanwhile, the prosecutor’s office has already called for the case to be closed, but a final decision has not yet been made.
