Major Renovation of Restaurants Begins on Malvarrosa Beach in Valencia

In Malvarrosa, old chiringuitos are being replaced with modern modules – what’s next for Valencia’s beloved promenade

Valencia has launched a renewal project for the restaurants on Malvarrosa Beach. Old buildings will be replaced by modular structures, increasing capacity and introducing eco-friendly solutions. The project will affect about ten establishments, many of which have been managed by the same families for generations.

Malvarrosa Beach in Valencia is undergoing significant changes: the long-awaited renovation of its famous restaurants and chiringuito has begun. These establishments, which first appeared in the mid-20th century when local families started serving cold drinks and rice dishes right on the sand, are now preparing for a new era.

In the 1990s, after the promenade was built, the chiringuito moved from the sand onto the sidewalk and became full-fledged restaurants where patrons could enjoy traditional paella or tapas. Today, another transformation is underway: the old concrete buildings will be replaced by modern, modular structures made from aluminum and glass. The new spaces will be larger, accommodate more guests, and meet modern environmental standards.

Malvarrosa is more than just a beach—it’s a symbol of urban life in Valencia. It’s always lively here: locals and tourists alike come for the atmosphere, sea breeze, and delicious food. Restaurants line the shore for a kilometer, offering shelter from the heat, refreshing drinks, and Mediterranean cuisine. Children have access to fully equipped play areas, while sports enthusiasts can play volleyball or mini-football on dedicated courts.

The change of generations has also touched the owners of the establishments: today, they are managed by the descendants of the founders, who carefully preserve family traditions. However, time takes its toll—the buildings have become outdated, and the proximity to the sea accelerates wear and tear. The issue of reconstruction has been raised more than once, but only now has the project received the green light. The delays were caused by numerous approvals required from city and state authorities, as well as demands for the new buildings’ environmental sustainability and architecture.

Work will begin with the restaurant El Bobo, which was established back in 1966. The owner notes that after renovation, a second floor with panoramic sea views will be added, and the kitchens and restrooms will become more spacious. All buildings will share a unified exterior style, but each restaurant will retain its own unique character inside. Modular construction will allow the relocation to be completed in just a few months, rather than a year and a half, as would be the case with traditional building methods.

Restaurant owners emphasize that despite the changes, they intend to preserve the spirit and culinary traditions of Malvarrosa. For many families, this is more than just a business—it’s part of the neighborhood’s history. There’s a sense of bittersweet nostalgia: the founders will not see the new life of their establishments, but their children and grandchildren are carrying on their legacy. Ahead lie new opportunities, but also new challenges: competing with chain restaurants, maintaining the waterfront’s infrastructure, and attracting both locals and tourists.

The move to modern buildings is not just a step toward comfort, but also an effort to preserve the unique atmosphere of the beach. In the coming months, Malvarrosa will change, yet remain a place where tradition and modernity meet.
