A Must-Do Hiking Route in Asturias: Rivers, Gorges, and Chestnut Forests

A nature lover’s trail: breathtaking route with postcard-perfect views

Asturias offers the perfect escape for nature lovers. Discover a scenic trail that winds through dramatic gorges and lush forests, ending with a breathtaking panoramic view from the summit.

Spain is full of places where you can escape the daily grind and reconnect with nature. For those seeking a way to recharge, hiking is a true salvation. The Asturian region, with its lush landscapes and mountain views, offers plenty of options for such getaways, one of which stands out in particular.

We’re talking about the Les Foces del Río Pendón circular trail, which culminates at the Varalonga peak. This roughly 12-kilometer route begins in the village of Fuensanta, part of the municipality of Nava. The starting point is at the parking area; from there, cross the bridge over the Para river and turn onto the well-marked trail to the left. Just a couple of hundred meters in, hikers will come to a fork where they should head toward Los Fornos. The asphalt ascent makes the beginning of the route quite comfortable, and dense chestnut groves provide welcome shade and coolness. As you gain elevation, you’ll be rewarded with views over the river valley and the Fuensanta bottling plant building.

After a short while, the trail leads to a small structure that you need to go around to reach the Los Fornos pass. On clear days, you’ll get a stunning view of the Sierra del Sueve mountain range from here. This is where the most spectacular part of the route begins—the Pendón gorge. After passing through a gate (be sure to close it behind you—it keeps livestock in), you’ll find yourself on a rocky path. From here, you can look down into the valley and see the Pendón river winding below.

After crossing the gorge, the landscape gradually gives way to dense forest, and at a certain point the trail leads directly to the riverbank. In case the ground is wet and slippery, a safety rope is installed along this section. Next, you’ll cross several streams on wooden bridges, walking beneath oaks and other sprawling trees that form a thick green canopy overhead.

Soon you’ll reach the Pendón bridge, after which another ascent begins, leading to an area called Les Vueltas. Here, you can either turn back toward Fuensanta or continue toward the main goal—the summit of Varalonga. Choosing a pace that suits you, you can make one final push to conquer the peak, standing at 865 meters. The reward for your effort will be breathtaking panoramic views from the highest point on the route. To complete the journey, simply follow the familiar trail back to your starting point, bringing with you memories of one of the most enjoyable and beautiful hikes in Asturias.
