Madrid to Get New 63,000 m² Park Around Controversial Site

Authorities expand green space in Montecarmelo

Authorities in Madrid have announced a large new park in Montecarmelo. The project has sparked debate among residents due to its proximity to a municipal facility. The decision could reshape the neighborhood and affect quality of life.

The decision by Madrid authorities to build a large park in Montecarmelo has become one of the most talked-about topics this spring. The new project affects thousands of residents, as it involves not only urban improvements but also proximity to a municipal facility that has long been a source of dissatisfaction in the neighborhood. Officials promise that the creation of a 63,000-square-meter green space will change the cityscape and offer new opportunities for recreation, but many fear that bold statements are hiding old problems.

As El Pais reports, the initiative includes planting more than 1,600 trees, creating a bike path, and organizing areas for children and dogs. The total budget for the project is 3.9 million euros. The park is expected not only to beautify the area, but also to serve as a buffer between residential neighborhoods and the so-called “cantón de limpieza”—a municipal facility that remains in place despite protests.

Doubts and expectations

Residents of Montecarmelo have repeatedly expressed skepticism about the promises made by city officials. Back in March, local authorities stated they would forgo placing heavy machinery and industrial equipment at the municipal facility, limiting its use to staff quarters and parking. However, many believe these assurances lack official documentation, and that the park project merely distracts from the main issue.

According to El Pais, some residents believe that authorities have simply merged two separate projects—the already ongoing ‘Parque Lineal de Montecarmelo’ and a new park near a municipal facility—to present the initiative as something larger. Meanwhile, landscaping work along the M-40 highway began back in November last year and was supposed to be completed by summer, although the timeline has already been pushed back.

Project details

The improvement plan includes not only new trees but also the installation of sports facilities, benches, and outdoor exercise equipment. There will be a separate play area for children and a dedicated space for dog owners. A bike lane will run along the park, aimed at improving transport connections and making the neighborhood more attractive to families with children.

Previously, a budget of 1.3 million euros had already been allocated for this purpose, but with the addition of the new section, the total has increased by another 2.6 million. Authorities emphasize that the municipal facility will be hidden behind a ‘green wall’ of trees and shrubs, and only staff and equipment rooms will be housed inside. They also promise that no waste or garbage will be stored on the premises.

Reaction and consequences

Despite assurances from the administration, some residents continue to insist on the need for official guarantees. Representatives of the ‘Plataforma No Al Cantón’ initiative point out contradictions: recently, dozens of trees were cut down around the municipal facility, and now the authorities promise to plant new ones. Many are also concerned about the idea of placing a large municipal facility in the center of a future park.

Skepticism is growing because, on paper, the project appears to meet residents’ demands, but in practice, the municipal facility remains unchanged. Some fear the park will serve merely as a cover to preserve unwanted infrastructure. Nevertheless, the creation of new green spaces in Madrid always attracts attention, as the city is in great need of extra areas for recreation and sports.

In recent years, Madrid has launched several projects to create and expand urban parks. For example, large green areas have been opened in the Valdebebas and Ensanche de Vallecas districts, which has noticeably improved the environment and made these neighborhoods more attractive for families. However, not all initiatives have been free of controversy: issues about proximity to industrial facilities and the transparency of government decisions are frequently brought up. Analysis by russpain.com shows that such projects are often met both with support and with criticism from local residents, especially when it comes to transforming areas with a complex usage history.
