Southern regions of Spain once again found themselves under severe weather conditions. On Friday morning, a red alert was issued in Murcia and along the Alicante coast due to heavy rainfall. In some areas, up to 180 liters of water per square meter fell in half a day, causing local flooding and disruptions to transportation.
Authorities promptly sent emergency alerts to the mobile phones of residents in coastal areas of Alicante, urging them to avoid dangerous locations and not to go down into basements. In some places, such as Relleu, record amounts of rainfall were recorded, and in Murcia, tourists had to be evacuated from a campsite due to flooding.
In Valencia, the downpours mainly occurred overnight, affecting areas such as L’Albufera and Catarroja, but no serious incidents were reported. Meanwhile, in Cartagena and Campo de Cartagena, significant accumulations of water were recorded—over 70 liters per square meter in some spots. Despite this, there were no major accidents or damage.
Due to the weather conditions, classes were canceled at schools in Alicante, Benidorm, Orihuela, Santa Pola, Elche, Cartagena, Mazarrón, and another dozen localities near the Mar Menor. In several areas of Valencia and Murcia, an orange alert is in effect, where up to 30 liters of rain may fall in an hour and up to 100 liters within 12 hours.
Emergency services worked through the night: firefighters in Alicante responded to over 30 calls, mainly to pump out water and clear road obstructions. The most interventions were required in Mutxamel. In Valencia, crews removed fallen trees and inspected flooded garages overnight.
In Murcia, a red alert remains in effect until midnight, while the Guadalentín Valley and Lorca are under a yellow warning. In the northern areas of Valencia and Castellón, the situation is less severe, but heavy downpours are still possible in some places.
Residents are strongly advised not to take risks, avoid crossing bodies of water, and refrain from leaving cars in low-lying areas. Meteorologists warn that rainfall may intensify in the coming hours, so it is too early to let your guard down.
