In Palma, the capital of the Balearic Islands, an Asian restaurant has been temporarily closed after a mass food poisoning incident was reported. According to the regional health department, 43 patrons contracted salmonellosis, 12 of whom were hospitalized with severe symptoms.
Health and epidemiology specialists launched an investigation after dozens of people sought medical attention over the course of a week, reporting high fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Analysis revealed that all cases were linked to visits to the same restaurant on Monday and Friday of the previous week.
During their inspection, health service officers collected samples of food and kitchen utensils for laboratory testing. The inspection found serious violations, including food being prepared and stored at improper temperatures, as well as shortcomings in cleaning and disinfection processes.
Authorities have decided to temporarily close the restaurant until all circumstances are clarified and the violations are addressed. Management has been given ten days to submit explanations, correct the deficiencies, and provide a plan for improving sanitary conditions.
Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection that often causes gastrointestinal disorders. Symptoms usually appear within 12 to 72 hours after infection and may include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In some cases, the illness can be severe and requires medical intervention.
Regional authorities remind the public of the importance of following sanitary standards when preparing and storing food to prevent similar incidents. Laboratory test results are expected soon and will help establish the exact cause of the outbreak and determine further measures.
Those affected continue to receive the necessary medical care. Authorities emphasize that oversight of public catering on the Balearic Islands will be strengthened to prevent similar cases in the future.
