Ahead of the high-profile trial against former Catalonia leader Jordi Pujol and members of his family, current Generalitat president Salvador Illa expressed the view that the age and physical condition of the accused should be taken into account. Pujol is already 95 years old, and his health is a concern for many observers. The hearings, related to charges of illegal activities, money laundering, document forgery, and tax violations, will begin at the National Court (Audiencia Nacional) on November 24.
Illa emphasized that the question of whether Pujol should attend the hearings in person must take into account his advanced age and health condition. According to the president, Spain’s justice system has the tools to consider such circumstances. He also noted that he does not see it as his place to offer recommendations on the matter but stressed the importance of compassion and the human factor.
At the same time, Salvador Illa highlighted the need to distinguish between Pujol’s political activities and any possible wrongdoing by those around him. He recalled that Pujol led Catalonia for 23 years and enjoyed widespread public support. In Illa’s view, Pujol’s contribution to the region’s development cannot be ignored, despite the scandals that have surrounded his family.
The President of Catalonia also pointed out that his own political views differ from those of Pujol, but he acknowledges the former leader’s contributions to promoting European values and fostering pragmatic relations with Madrid. Ilya emphasized that he does not support extreme views, preferring a balanced approach to assessing the actions of past politicians.
The question of whether Pujol should appear in court in person remains unresolved. Many believe that someone of such advanced age should not be subjected to additional stress if his health does not permit it. However, the final decision rests with the court, which must balance humanity with the need for a fair trial.
