Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister and Secretary General of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), issued a statement highlighting the significance of Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral election. In his view, this result shows that social democracy has a future, even amid the growing influence of ultraconservative forces around the world.
During his remarks at the Socialist International Council meeting, Sánchez emphasized that history is not predetermined and does not follow set algorithms. He pointed out that it is people who shape the future, and that the role of politicians is to serve society, support its aspirations, and help fulfill its dreams. Sánchez expressed confidence that the social democratic model is capable of delivering real results and improving people’s lives.
Social democracy as a response to today’s challenges
Sánchez elaborated on the benefits of progressive policies. According to him, wherever progressive forces are in power, wages rise, public services improve, freedoms expand, and vulnerable groups are protected. He added that such societies become more stable and democracy grows stronger.
In contrast, Sánchez advocated for unrestricted markets, which, in his view, cannot ensure citizens’ protection, as well as nationalist ideas that fail to create new opportunities. He emphasized that austerity policies do not build a future, but instead worsen social problems.
Mamdani’s victory is not an exception, but a trend
The Spanish prime minister drew special attention to Zohran Mamdani’s success in New York, stressing that this case should not be seen as an isolated incident. Sánchez believes Mamdani’s victory is a sign of where the energy for change lies today: among those who offer hope, not fear.
He called on social democracy supporters to remain optimistic and believe in the possibility of change. According to Sánchez, it is now more important than ever not to abandon the principles that have been the foundation of European societies for decades.
Criticism of traditional right-wing parties
In his speech, Sánchez also criticized traditional right-wing parties. He noted that until recently, they still shared a common set of values with social democrats, but in recent years this foundation has been lost. According to him, conservative forces, trying to control the far right, have ultimately fallen under their influence.
Sánchez stated that right-wing parties are adopting the ideas and methods of radicals, abandoning their own values in order to retain their electorate. As a result, in his view, they risk losing not only their principles but also the support of voters.
Challenges and tasks for progressive forces
Pedro Sánchez emphasized that the mission of social democracy is especially relevant today. He reminded that the task of progressive politicians is to defend people’s interests, expand their opportunities, and support democratic institutions. Sánchez is convinced that only by doing so can the growing wave of far-right ideas be resisted and stability in society preserved.
In closing his speech, he expressed confidence that history still belongs to people, not algorithms or political dogmas. Sánchez urged not to lose faith in change and to continue striving for a just and free society.
