Scandalous gesture at Benidorm Fest 2026: RTVE backs artists’ freedom

Unexpected twist at the festival finale draws record public attention

Lucycalys and Tony Grox’s victory at Benidorm Fest 2026 sparked a wave of emotions. Nebulossa’s gesture with the Palestinian flag became a hot topic. RTVE defended the performers’ right to freedom of expression.

Benidorm Fest 2026 was not just a music event, but also a platform for discussing freedom of expression in Spain. The victory of the duo Lucycalys and Tony Grox brought them not just recognition, but also new opportunities to advance their careers. However, it was Nebulossa’s unexpected gesture during the final that sparked a wave of discussion, raising issues far beyond the realm of music.

At the height of a sunny day in Benidorm, the festival winners appeared at the Casa de Cultura, where they were greeted with applause and the music of their hit T amaré. The artists from Cádiz not only received the top prize and cash award, but also the chance to record a new single in Miami thanks to a special Univisión honor. Tony Grox openly expressed hopes for collaboration with the renowned producer Tainy, which could mark a new chapter in his creative journey.

RTVE’s response

Alongside the winners on stage was María Eizaguirre, who oversees communications and participation for RTVE. She noted that the song T amaré promises to become a summer hit, but public attention was drawn to another moment—the act by Nebulossa, who displayed the Palestinian flag during the final performance. Eizaguirre stressed that RTVE gives artists complete freedom of expression, and this gesture was a personal choice by the performer. She also reminded everyone of RTVE’s 70th anniversary and the festival’s significance for the national music scene.

According to Eizaguirre, RTVE plays a key role in supporting the country’s cultural industries. Without such support, in her opinion, music, cinema, and literature in Spain could face serious difficulties. This statement was made amid discussions about the significance of Benidorm Fest as a platform for emerging talents and bold statements.

Victors’ emotions

Lucycalys and Tony Grox, still coming to terms with their success, expressed gratitude to the viewers who made them the leaders of the vote. Lucycalys admitted that she had followed the festival since childhood, and now found herself at its very peak. She shared that her friends not only supported her but also took part in creating the music video and preparing for the final. The morning after the victory turned out to be a real surprise for the artists, one they shared with their loved ones.

The winners noted that the transition from fans to champions was not easy for them. They shared that the night after the final was spent reflecting and trying to process what had happened. For Lucycalys, having her friends involved in the project was especially important, as it was precisely the support of those close to her that helped her overcome nerves and believe in success.

Audience and results

The Benidorm Fest 2026 final drew 11% of TV viewers, with the youth segment reaching a 28% share. Despite an overall drop in interest due to the date coinciding with other major events, organizers highlighted a high caliber of participants and growing show quality. 11,000 people voted for the victory of the Lucycalys and Tony Grox duo, while Rosalinda Galán took second place with 8,900 votes.

A total of 46,000 votes were recorded through various channels, reflecting the ongoing interest in the festival. Eizaguirre also confirmed plans to hold the next, sixth edition of Benidorm Fest in 2027, following negotiations with the municipality and the government of the Comunitat Valenciana.

In recent years, Benidorm Fest has repeatedly served as a stage for vibrant performances and public debate. In 2024, attention was drawn to a campaign supporting the LGBT community, and in 2025—to discussions about the role of social media in promoting young artists. Each time, the festival reaffirms its reputation as not only a musical, but also a social phenomenon capable of shaping the country’s cultural agenda.
