Shepherd from Jaén survives a month in the mountains without contact after violent storm

Weather disruptions in Andalusia leave farmers facing unexpected challenges and tough decisions

A shepherd in the mountains of Jaén was cut off from the world for nearly a month. The storm destroyed roads and communications, threatening his flock. Rescuers trekked 17 kilometers to find the man alive.

Harsh weather conditions in Andalusia have once again revealed how vulnerable Spain’s rural residents are to the elements. In the province of Jaén, heavy rains and snow completely cut off shepherd Javier González in his home in the Sierra de Segura mountains. For nearly a month, he was isolated with no contact or access to the outside world, while his flock was at risk of perishing. This story has become a symbol of how extreme weather can abruptly upend daily life and threaten the economic stability of entire regions.

As conditions began to improve, local authorities and environmental service workers launched a search operation. They had to cover 17 kilometers, some of it on foot over difficult terrain, to reach the shepherd. According to El Pais, González was found alive together with his remaining sheep, chickens, and several dogs and cats. He admitted feeling deep fear due to the prolonged bad weather and being unable to leave his house. His only link to the outside world was a radio, which he powered using solar panels.

Consequences for farmers

The natural disaster dealt a serious blow to the region’s livestock sector. Due to the severe weather, the shepherd managed to save only part of the herd—the rest scattered across the mountains during one of the storms. Neighboring farmers faced similar challenges: many sheep and goats were left without feed, and food supplies could only be delivered by helicopter. According to El Pais, authorities organized air delivery of over 600 kilograms of animal feed to support farmers until the roads are restored.

Losses proved significant not only for Gonzalez. In other parts of Andalusia, such as Granada, Cadiz, and Malaga, farmers report mass deaths of sheep and goats, as well as a sharp increase in expenses for extra feed and veterinary care. The situation has been especially difficult for those engaged in extensive and nomadic livestock farming. In some farms, mortality rates among young animals reached 50%, directly impacting income and eligibility for EU Common Agricultural Policy subsidies.

Response and support

The weather-related challenges have affected not only individual farmers but the entire regional agricultural system. Industry representatives note that, without targeted support from the government and autonomous authorities, many farms may be at risk of closure. According to one farmer, his losses amounted to about 20,000 euros, and the lack of young animals will prevent him from meeting requirements for financial aid.

The authorities of Andalusia and Spain have already announced support measures, but farmers insist on the need for targeted aid for those who have suffered the greatest losses. As weather catastrophes become more frequent, the issue of adapting agriculture to new risks is becoming increasingly relevant. According to El Pais, many farmers fear that without changes to the support system and infrastructure, similar situations will keep recurring.

Context and similar cases

In recent years, Spain has faced an increasing number of extreme weather events, leading to the isolation of entire villages and farms. In 2021, a similar situation occurred in Castilla-La Mancha, where several shepherds became trapped by heavy snowfall and were only evacuated after a week. In 2023, severe rains in Aragon destroyed bridges and roads, cutting off dozens of families. Such incidents highlight the need to develop early warning systems and improve rural infrastructure to minimize the consequences of future disasters.
