Eight autonomous communities in northern Spain are in the spotlight due to severe weather conditions. Since early morning, these regions have been experiencing heavy snowfall and dangerous coastal storms. Authorities have issued orange and yellow weather alerts, warning of possible transport disruptions and threats to public safety.
Mountain snowfall: hazards on roads and in towns
The situation is particularly tense in Asturias, Cantabria, and Castilla y León. Mountain areas in these regions could see up to 30 centimeters of snow in 24 hours, with even more in some locations. The snowpack is accumulating quickly at elevations above 900 meters, making travel difficult and posing risks for drivers. In Cantabria and Asturias, snowfall has continued for a second consecutive day, and meteorologists warn that the situation may worsen further.
Catalonia and the Balearic Islands: storm-force winds and high waves
In Catalonia, the alert is due not only to precipitation, but also to strong winds. In the coastal areas of Girona and Tarragona, gusts reach up to 90 kilometers per hour, with waves as high as 4 meters at sea. Authorities are urging residents and tourists to stay away from the water. The Balearic Islands are also under a yellow alert due to stormy weather: marine winds of up to 55 kilometers per hour and waves up to 3 meters are expected.
Yellow alerts: more regions under threat
In addition to the previously mentioned regions, Aragón, La Rioja, Navarra, and the Basque Country are now at risk. Snowfall is expected in these areas, which could disrupt daily life and complicate the work of public services. In Navarra and the Basque Country, warnings will come into effect in the afternoon. In Cantabria, heavy rain is also forecast in addition to snow, with more than 40 liters per square meter expected to fall within 12 hours.
The situation remains tense: forecasts for the next 24 hours
Meteorologists note that adverse weather conditions will persist over the next 24 hours. In some areas, snowfall and storms may intensify, leading to further transport disruptions and potential emergencies. Residents in the northern regions are advised to exercise caution, stay updated, and avoid long-distance travel if possible.
