Spain is once again facing a powerful heatwave that has swept over much of the country after a brief drop in temperatures. Since Thursday, thermometers have been rising rapidly, and in the coming days, some regions are expected to see extreme temperatures of up to 45°C.
As a result, a yellow weather alert has been issued in eleven provinces. These include Ourense in Galicia, Badajoz and Cáceres in Extremadura, Lleida in Catalonia, Toledo in Castilla-La Mancha, Huesca and Zaragoza in Aragon, as well as Córdoba, Huelva, Jaén, and Sevilla in Andalusia. In Córdoba and Sevilla, temperatures may reach 42°C.
Conditions will be especially hot in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. The inland areas of Galicia, such as Ourense, are preparing for temperatures of 40°C, while in A Coruña and Vigo, 29-31°C is expected. In León, where the risk of wildfires remains high, temperatures will reach up to 35°C. In Catalonia, Lleida is forecast to see up to 40°C, and in Madrid — up to 37°C.
The most severe conditions are unfolding in the southwest of the country. In Badajoz, Sevilla, and Córdoba, the heat will reach 42°C, while Murcia is expected to see 37°C, Albacete 35°C, and Valencia 31°C. At night, temperatures in the southern regions will not fall below 20°C, except in the mountainous areas and northwestern lowlands.
During the day, cloud cover will start to form in the central and northeastern regions of the country, which may lead to thunderstorms and brief downpours. Particularly heavy rainfall is possible in the Pyrenees (Huesca, Lleida, Girona), as well as in some inland areas of Castellón and Teruel. A dust storm (calima) is expected in the southern Canary Islands.
Meteorologists warn that the heat will persist through the weekend. On Friday, heat advisories will be in effect in almost all regions except Murcia and the Canary Islands. In Sevilla, Córdoba, Jaén, Toledo, Cáceres, and Badajoz, temperatures will consistently exceed 40°C.
On Saturday, the heat will spread to the Ebro Valley, Madrid, Murcia, and Valencia. Córdoba is expected to reach up to 44°C, Sevilla — 43°C, and Badajoz and Zaragoza — 42°C. On Sunday, the heat will intensify: Córdoba and Sevilla are forecast to reach up to 45°C, while Zaragoza, Lleida, Murcia, and Badajoz will see around 42°C, and Cáceres, Toledo, Ciudad Real, Granada, Albacete, and Huesca — above 40°C.
Forecasts may be updated as new data arrives. However, meteorologists are confident that the coming days will be among the hottest this summer. Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and monitor updates from weather services.
