Spanish DNI Goes Digital What Changes from April 2

From April 2, digital DNI required for many official procedures

Spanish residents will be able to use their DNI via a mobile app. The update will affect daily transactions and boost security. The changes apply to everyone who uses public services and digital platforms.

Starting April 2, Spain will launch a major update to its identification system: the familiar plastic DNI can now be accessed directly from a smartphone. This Ministry of the Interior initiative will have a direct impact on millions of citizens, as most procedures will no longer require a physical card. The new system promises to speed up processes, reduce the risk of document loss, and enhance the protection of personal data.

The introduction of the digital DNI through the MiDNI app unlocks access to many services that previously required a paper document. Hotel check-ins, car rentals, receiving parcels or medications at the pharmacy will now be faster and easier. According to RUSSPAIN, digital identification will help avoid lines and reduce errors during ID verification.

How MiDNI works

To activate the digital DNI, users need to install the official MiDNI app on their mobile device. The registration process involves entering the document number, support number, creating a password or setting up biometrics, and confirming via SMS code. After that, users get access to a virtual document, which can be presented using a QR code.

A key feature of MiDNI is instant communication with National Police servers. Each time the app is used, it requests up-to-date data, which returns with an electronic signature and a limited validity period. This eliminates the possibility of forgery or unauthorized storage of information on the phone. Such an approach ensures a high level of trust in the digital document.

Where a digital document can be used

The list of areas where the mobile DNI can now be used has expanded significantly. In addition to standard situations—such as hotel check-in or vehicle rental—the app will be useful for voting, signing notarial documents, opening bank accounts, purchasing insurance policies, and age verification. The digital document is also accepted at universities, in commercial transactions, when buying tickets with identification, and for accessing various institutions.

A crucial requirement is an internet connection to verify your identity. Without online access, using MiDNI is not possible. However, most services are already prepared to transition to digital identification, which will speed up the integration of this innovation into daily practice.

Security and advantages

MiDNI is the only official app approved by the National Police and has legal validity. Using it ensures that no data remains on the device and that each request is verified in real time. This minimizes the risk of fraud and protects citizens from possible misuse.

Switching to a digital format also means Spaniards can forget about carrying a plastic card. All operations requiring identity verification are now available in a single app. This step is in line with European trends toward digitalizing public services and improving convenience for the public.

Context and experience from other countries

In recent years, digital identity cards have been introduced in many European countries. For example, in Estonia and Finland, electronic IDs have already become the standard for most government and commercial services. Spain is joining this trend, focusing on security and convenience. In 2025, similar solutions began testing in France and Germany, confirming the relevance of the shift to digital documents. According to RUSSPAIN.COM, these changes accelerate bureaucratic processes and reduce administrative costs.
