A powerful storm has struck Spain, triggering alerts in eight autonomous communities. On Saturday, weather conditions deteriorated sharply across most of the country with heavy rains, gale-force winds, and dangerous sea swells. The situation is particularly severe in the Canary Islands, as well as in Andalucía, Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Ceuta, and Melilla.
Meteorologists have declared an orange alert for several regions. Andalucía and Ceuta are expecting torrential rain with significant precipitation, Galicia faces storm surges, and all the Canary Islands are experiencing the harshest weather of recent months. Up to 80 liters of rain per square meter could fall in a single day, with wind gusts reaching 90 kilometers per hour. Waves up to six meters high are being recorded along the coast, and snow has fallen in the mountains of Tenerife.
Canary Islands
An orange alert is in effect across the archipelago due to Cyclone Emilia. All seven islands are at risk, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong northerly winds. Snow is falling in the mountains and highlands, while stormy seas batter the coastline. Residents and tourists have been advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary and to avoid hazardous areas.
Throughout the day, the Canary Islands have experienced localized flooding, transport disruptions, and temporary power outages. Authorities are warning of landslide and road washout risks, especially in mountainous regions. Schools and administrative buildings have been temporarily closed in some municipalities.
Southern and northern Spain
Weather warnings have been issued in Andalusia due to heavy rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms. The region’s coastline is being battered by storms, with some areas experiencing street flooding and transportation disruptions. In Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, and the Basque Country, the main threat comes from the sea: powerful waves are rising along the coast, and fishermen and owners of small boats are advised to stay ashore.
Inland, especially in the province of Lugo, dense fog is complicating road conditions. Melilla and Ceuta are also on alert due to heavy rain, wind, and waves. Authorities are urging residents to exercise caution and follow the latest weather updates.
Cyclone movement
Cyclone Emilia is moving slowly southward, remaining between the Canary Islands and the Bay of Cádiz. Forecasts indicate it will stay in this area at least through the weekend. In the coming hours, heavier rainfall and stronger winds are expected in the southwestern part of the country, as well as around the Strait of Gibraltar.
Meteorologists note that unstable weather in the coming days will also affect the Mediterranean coast. Some areas in southeastern Spain could see significant rainfall accumulations, potentially causing new flooding and further transport disruptions.
Impact and forecast
As a result of the severe weather, several regions have already experienced power outages, temporary road closures, and canceled ferry services. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary, and tourists to closely monitor changing weather conditions.
The storm is expected to maintain its strength over the coming days, and may even intensify in some areas. Emergency services are operating in enhanced mode to respond quickly to possible emergencies.
