In the coming hours, Catalonia residents will face yet another challenge: emergency services are warning of a sharp increase in wind speeds that could impact daily life and safety across several regions. The situation is particularly concerning for coastal and foothill areas, where the strongest gusts are expected. Authorities have already activated special protocols to minimize potential consequences and ensure a prompt response to any incidents.
According to meteorologists, a new front is expected to approach overnight from Sunday to Monday, bringing with it a significant increase in wind. The greatest risk is forecast for the regions of Anoia (Anoia), Alt Penedès (Alt Penedès), and Baix Penedès (Baix Penedès), where gusts could reach dangerous levels. In the morning, the weather system will spread to the coasts and foothills of Barcelona and Tarragona, and by midday and throughout the afternoon, winds will intensify in the mountain areas of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees.
Regional impact
Particular attention is being paid to road safety and areas near power lines, where strong winds can cause traffic disruptions and infrastructure damage. Residents are advised to avoid parking cars under trees or billboards and to exercise caution when moving around the streets. Some municipalities have already imposed restrictions on holding mass outdoor events.
Although the warning for high waves at sea has been lifted, waves up to 2.5 meters remain possible during the first half of the day. This poses additional risks for fishermen and owners of small boats, who are advised to avoid going out to sea until weather conditions stabilize.
Mountain hazards
Avalanche risk remains high in mountainous areas. In Aran and the northern strip of Pallaresa, a level four warning is in place out of five, while other mountain sectors are at level three. Tourists and winter sports enthusiasts are strongly advised to avoid mountain excursions and closely follow updates from civil protection services.
Authorities emphasize that the situation can change rapidly and urge residents to monitor official updates. If weather conditions worsen, emergency services are prepared to respond promptly to incidents involving fallen trees, power outages, or transport disruptions.
Expectations and recommendations
During the day, local power outages and disruptions to public transportation are possible, especially in areas where the strongest winds are expected. Residents are advised to prepare in advance for possible inconveniences, charge mobile devices, and minimize travel during peak storm activity when possible.
In recent years, Catalonia has repeatedly faced similar weather events. In January 2023, strong winds had already caused widespread power outages and damaged infrastructure in coastal areas. Emergency services then operated in enhanced mode, and the aftermath was dealt with over several days. Such situations highlight the importance of timely public information and readiness for prompt action in case of emergencies.
