A tragedy occurred in central Benidorm this morning: scaffolding collapsed on Ibiza Street near building No. 2, resulting in the deaths of two workers. The incident happened around 10:49, when work at the site had already been completed and the structure was being raised to a vertical position. According to the Consorcio Provincial de Bomberos de Alicante, both victims were trapped under the debris and did not survive.
The site of the accident is the 18-storey Principado Europa tower in the Levante area. After the alarm was raised, nearly ten firefighters from the city station arrived at the scene, including a command unit, a special van, and an aerial ladder truck. The area was quickly cordoned off: vehicle traffic and pedestrian access on Ibiza Street were completely halted to allow rescue and medical teams to work.
The causes of the collapse are still being investigated. According to CICU, SAMU and SVB crews were dispatched to the scene, but the doctors could only confirm the deaths of both workers. Emergency services note that debris removal is ongoing and the circumstances of the accident will be subject to a separate investigation.
The incident in Benidorm serves as a reminder of other recent accidents at construction sites and residential buildings in the region. Earlier, there was an explosion in an apartment building in Ibiza, which led to a mass evacuation and hospitalization of several people — details of this incident are available here.
City authorities and relevant agencies emphasize the importance of following safety regulations at construction sites, especially when working with large structures. Additional inspections of similar sites in the region are expected in the coming days.
