The authorities of the Valencian Community have decided to give special recognition to those who distinguished themselves during the emergency that broke out at the end of October last year. On October 9, the Day of the Region, a solemn ceremony will be held where the highest regional honors will be awarded to representatives of autonomous communities, as well as to dozens of organizations and associations involved in eliminating the aftermath of the devastating disaster.
The list of honorees includes not only regional authorities, but also emergency service workers, medical professionals, volunteers, social service representatives, non-profit organizations, business entities, universities, schools, farmers, judicial bodies, religious communities, and even international partners. All have contributed to the efforts to address the consequences of the catastrophe, which claimed 229 lives.
Special attention has been paid to the fact that the victims of the tragedy are not included among those honored—a separate memorial ceremony is being prepared for them, to be held on October 29. Some associations of victims have refused to participate in the awards ceremony, expressing their respect for the regional institutions.
Organizers emphasize that the awards are not merely a formality, but a recognition of the genuine support and unity demonstrated during the most difficult days. The awards will be presented, among others, by the head of Aragón, who will accept them on behalf of all autonomous communities. Authorities also clarified that the tele-assistance service, used by 37 of the victims, fulfilled its duties to the extent possible. The ceremony’s start time was moved to allow participants to attend the region’s traditional flag procession.
