Which Drivers in Spain Will Continue to Use Warning Triangles After 2026?

Key updates: Who is exempt from the mandatory V16 beacon in Spain

Starting January 1, 2026, Spain will require the use of V16 emergency beacons. However, some drivers will still be allowed to follow the previous regulations. Find out who can continue to use warning triangles.

Starting January 1, 2026, a new requirement comes into effect on Spanish roads: all drivers will be required to carry a modern V16 device, replacing the traditional emergency triangles. This compact yellow beacon features a communication system and emits a bright light visible from 360 degrees. The new rule aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of emergency situations.

The V16 device should be kept in an easily accessible location—most often it’s recommended to be stored in the glove compartment. In case of an emergency stop or vehicle breakdown, the driver can quickly take out the beacon and place it on the car roof. Thanks to its high-intensity light, the signal remains visible to other motorists even in adverse weather conditions or in areas with limited visibility.

Advantages of the V16 beacon

The main difference between the new beacon and the old triangles is that you can alert other drivers to a problem without leaving your car. This is especially important on highways and in poor visibility conditions, where stepping out of the vehicle can be life-threatening. The V16 light signal is visible up to a kilometer away in good weather, and at the maximum possible distance in fog or rain.

Another advantage is the built-in data transmission system. Some V16 models automatically send the car’s location to emergency services, speeding up response times in the event of an accident or breakdown. Thus, the new system not only increases safety, but also makes rescue operations easier.

Who is exempt from using the beacon

Despite the new requirement, there are categories of drivers for whom the use of the V16 is not mandatory. Most notably, this applies to foreign motorists who are temporarily in Spain. They may continue using the standard emergency triangles if their vehicle is registered outside the country.

In addition, there is an exception for owners of motorcycles and scooters. The requirement to have a V16 beacon does not apply to these vehicles. All other drivers—owners of passenger cars, trucks, and buses—will be required to equip their vehicles with the new device.

Penalties for non-compliance

Failure to comply with the new rules will result in administrative penalties. After January 1, 2026, if a driver cannot present a V16 beacon when requested by an inspector, they will face a fine. The exact amount has not yet been specified, but authorities emphasize that enforcement will be strict.

It is important to remember: after the law comes into effect, having only emergency triangles does not exempt you from liability. Exceptions apply only to those who officially fall under the specified categories.

Practical tips

Experts recommend purchasing a certified V16 beacon in advance and familiarizing yourself with the instructions for use. Various models with different prices and functionalities are already available on the market. When choosing a device, make sure it has official markings and meets safety standards.

Specialists also advise regularly checking the beacon’s functionality to avoid unpleasant surprises in an emergency. It is best to store the device inside the car so you can use it quickly if needed without stepping out onto the roadway.

If you didn’t know, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) is Spain’s main government agency responsible for road safety and introducing new standards on the country’s roads. Under the leadership of Pere Navarro, the DGT regularly updates regulations and implements modern technologies to reduce accidents. The introduction of the V16 beacon is part of a large-scale program to modernize the transport system and enhance the safety of all road users.
