A morning on one of the busy streets of Santa Cruz de Tenerife turned into a tragedy. A young woman, only 22 years old, was struck by a city tram. The incident occurred on Avenida Islas Canarias, near the 29 de Mayo roundabout, between the Puente Zurita and Cruz del Señor stops. At the time, the tram was heading toward the city center.
Local and national police officers, along with two ambulance crews, swiftly arrived at the scene. However, despite the efforts of the medics, the woman could not be saved—her injuries were too severe. Firefighters had to work at the site to recover the body from under the tram car.
As a result of the accident, tram service at several stops was completely suspended. Since 10:30 a.m., the Puente Zurita, Cruz del Señor, and Conservatorio stations have not been operating. From 10:45, trams have only been running between the Trinidad-Chimisay and La Paz-Intercambiador stations. In addition, car and bus traffic in the area has been blocked, causing major traffic jams and inconvenience for residents.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident. It remains unclear how the woman ended up on the tracks as the tram was approaching. Authorities are urging locals to exercise caution near railways and to pay attention to signals at crossings. Service is expected to resume in the coming hours, but the aftermath of the tragedy is likely to be discussed in the city for some time.
