Most Spanish Residents Consider Eco-Friendly Cars Unaffordable

Midas identifies main barriers to purchasing electric vehicles in Madrid and other regions

Spain is debating the cost and operation of eco-friendly vehicles, with particular attention to infrastructure and services. The study examines attitudes toward sustainable mobility and analyzes regional differences.

A recent analysis by Midas revealed that a significant number of Spaniards are not ready to purchase eco-friendly vehicles due to their high cost. According to the survey, six out of ten respondents consider these vehicles too expensive, making this the main obstacle to the adoption of electric and hybrid cars.

However, price is not the only factor holding back the development of sustainable mobility. About 47% of study participants expressed concern over the lack of sufficient charging stations. Another 28% pointed to difficulties related to daily use and the charging process.

Across different regions of the country, perceptions of the cost of eco-friendly cars vary. In Cantabria, Navarra, and Extremadura, more than 75% of respondents cited price as the main deterrent. In these autonomous communities, the issue of electric vehicle affordability is especially acute.

Uncertainty tied to the maintenance of new models is also a concern. More than half of Spaniards (almost 55%) are unsure about predicted service costs. Nearly 44% believe that finding a qualified auto shop is difficult, and a third of respondents struggle to find spare parts.

Midas notes that they are working to reduce drivers’ concerns by offering professional solutions and support during the transition to more environmentally friendly mobility.

The study also found that attitudes toward sustainable mobility are mixed. Nearly 45% of respondents prioritize price when choosing a car, despite the importance of environmental factors. About a third try to favor cleaner technologies, while 17% do not consider this issue significant.

The second part of the survey focuses on assessing cities’ readiness for new transport realities. Four out of ten residents believe their locality is partially adapted but needs further improvement. A quarter of respondents are convinced that the infrastructure does not yet meet modern standards, and only 18% are satisfied with the current level of development, including the availability of bike lanes.

Among the measures that Spaniards believe should be implemented in the coming years, top priorities are expanding the network of charging stations (57%), developing eco-friendly public transport, and encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles (49% each). A third of those surveyed consider raising awareness about the benefits of sustainable mobility to be important.

As for prospects, 38% of respondents believe that hybrid vehicles will soon dominate the roads. Around 22% are betting on electric cars, while 21% think that modern gasoline and diesel engines will maintain their relevance.
