Spanish lottery La Primitiva awards three players with major prizes

Dreams Come True in Spain: How the Country's Oldest Lottery Changes Lives

A large prize was once again drawn in Spain. Several participants were lucky this time, receiving substantial cash amounts. Learn more about this fortunate event.

Every draw of Spain’s oldest lottery, La Primitiva, is a small national tradition filled with hope and anticipation. For thousands across the kingdom, it remains a symbol of faith in miracles—a chance to dramatically change one’s life or simply enjoy a thrill. This past Monday, September 29, fortune once again chose its favorites. Three lucky winners took home second-category prizes, with each receiving €35,148.68. Luck had a wide reach this time: the winning tickets were purchased in the small municipality of Perafita (Barcelona), in the vibrant Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), and the third winner placed their bet online via the official portal of the state lotteries.

The winning combination drawn from the lottery machine that evening brought them their triumph. The main numbers were 01, 08, 14, 25, 34, and 49. The complementary ball (complementario) was number 16, and the refund number (reintegro) was 0. For those who tried their luck in the additional “Joker” game, the winning number sequence was 5 306 549, awarding a prize of one million euros.

La Primitiva is rightly considered one of the oldest games of chance in the world. Its origins date back to the 18th century, during the reign of Charles III. The first draw was held on December 10, 1763, at the initiative of the Marquis di Squillace, who aimed to replenish the state treasury without introducing new taxes. After spending many decades in obscurity, the lottery was revived in its modern form only in 1985, quickly gaining popularity across the country. The rules are simple: participants must choose six numbers from 1 to 49. The grand prize, which belongs to a special category, goes to those who match not only all six numbers, but also the Reintegro number.

The prize system in the lottery is multi-tiered, allowing players to win even by matching just three numbers. There are a total of six regular prize categories and one special category. Additionally, for an extra euro, players can activate the ‘Joker’ option. This is a separate draw with a randomly generated seven-digit code; if the code matches the winning number, it brings a fixed prize of one million euros.
