The region’s history as a fortress dates back to its conquest by the Moors in the 8th century, and it has been a Spanish colony since 1497. Melilla is renowned for its architecture, including the Castillo de MarΓa Cristina, the Fuente de Villa-Vivienda, and the Church of Notre Dame de la Victoria. Trade and fishing are key sectors of the local economy, and tourism has been developing in recent years.
