Raspberry Pi 500 Plus Debuts With New Design and Enhanced Features

Raspberry Pi Foundation surprises with a new device: keyboard and computer combined in one case

A new version of the popular mini-computer was unveiled in Spain. The device features hardware improvements. The model targets a broad range of users. The package includes additional accessories.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has unveiled a new version of its mini-computer, called the Raspberry Pi 500 Plus. The device comes in a keyboard form factor, making it extremely convenient for quick setup and use. This approach allows users to start working immediately after connecting the device, without the need for complex setup or assembly.

The Raspberry Pi 500 Plus is designed not only for educational institutions but also for enthusiasts and professionals who require a compact and functional solution. With all components integrated into the keyboard case, users can save time on installation and get straight to work or study.

Technical specifications and internal changes

Inside, the device features a Broadcom BCM2712 processor based on the ARM Cortex-A76 architecture with four cores and a clock speed of 2.4 GHz. RAM capacity has been increased to 16 GB LPDDR4x-4267, which is double that of the base version. For data storage, there is a built-in 256 GB SSD connected via an M.2 2280 slot, as well as a microSD card slot. This expands the device’s capabilities for various tasks, including storing large amounts of data.

The package includes a special tool that makes it easy to open the keyboard case and replace necessary components. This approach simplifies maintenance and upgrades, which is especially important for educational and professional use.

Updated keyboard design and additional features

The Raspberry Pi 500 Plus keyboard features significant improvements over previous models. Instead of membrane keys, it now uses Gateron KS-33 Blue mechanical switches, each with individual RGB LEDs. This provides customizable backlighting and enhances comfort when working in low-light conditions.

The device is equipped with an RP2040 microcontroller that manages the keyboard and supports open-source QMK software for flexible customization. The keys have a low profile, are coated using an aerosol method, and are further laser-processed to ensure even symbol illumination. For those wishing to replace the standard keycaps, the keyboard is compatible with most third-party sets, and a keycap puller is included in the box.

Connectivity options and package contents

The Raspberry Pi 500 Plus comes with all the necessary ports: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, two micro-HDMI outputs for monitors up to 4K, three USB Type-A ports, a Gigabit Ethernet port, and a 40-pin expansion connector. This allows the device to be used at home, in the office, or in the classroom.

The new model is priced at $200, which is noticeably higher than the previous version. For those looking to purchase a complete set, a ‘Desktop Kit’ is available, including a branded mouse, a 27W USB-C power supply, and a 2-meter micro-HDMI cable. The manufacturer guarantees production of the device at least until January 2035, ensuring long-term support and availability of spare parts.
