How to Visit Galicia’s Two Most Famous Nature Reserves for Free in Summer 2025: A Booking Guide

Tesoros secretos de Galicia: cómo acceder a lugares reservados para unos pocos

Two unique natural sites in Galicia — Playa de las Catedrales and Fuciño do Porco — have restricted access in summer. Here’s how to reserve your visit in advance for free and discover these natural wonders.

Galicia, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and unique natural landmarks, is preparing for the summer tourist season of 2025. To preserve its two most iconic attractions and ensure visitor comfort, authorities are once again introducing a mandatory advance reservation system. This measure applies to the famous Beach of the Cathedrals and the breathtaking Fuciño do Porco trail.

One of the jewels of Lugo province’s coastline is the Fuciño do Porco trail (O Fuciño do Porco), located in the municipality of O Vicedo. Its official name is Punta Socastro, but it is popularly known by a nickname that translates as “pig’s snout” due to the shape of the rock when viewed from the sea. The route features a network of wooden walkways and stairs zigzagging down steep cliffs, offering panoramic views of the Cantabrian Sea. To visit during peak season, from July 1 to August 31, you must secure a free permit in advance. Access with reservation is available from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The trail stretches for 1.3 kilometers, starting from playa de Abrela, and both the checkpoint and the entire route must be completed in no more than 45 minutes.

The second site requiring advance planning is the Beach of the Cathedrals (Playa de las Catedrales) in Ribadeo, recognized as a Natural Monument. It is renowned for its monumental rock arches and grottoes that recall the vaults of a Gothic cathedral. Restrictions apply from July 1 to September 30, as well as during Holy Week (Semana Santa). No more than 4,000 visitors are allowed on the beach per day. Entrance is also free, but the key factor for a visit is the tidal schedule. Walking beneath the majestic arches and exploring the caves is possible only at low tide, when the water recedes and the sandy strip is exposed.

The reservation system for both sites was introduced to combat overcrowding and protect fragile natural ecosystems. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes, bring drinking water, and use sun protection. It is essential to strictly follow the established rules of conduct and treat the environment with care. Planning ahead not only guarantees entry to these unique places but also allows you to fully enjoy the beauty of Galicia’s nature without the rush and crowds.
