Unique Hiking Trail with Waterfalls and Natural Pools Opens in Málaga Province to Escape Summer Heat

Sendero secreto en Málaga: lagos esmeralda y cascadas que no conocías

A picturesque route has been laid out in the Serranía de Ronda mountains, combining hiking with swimming in crystal-clear pools. Discover a cool oasis with waterfalls and pine forests in the heart of Andalusia. The perfect summer plan in the province of Málaga.

At the height of the summer season, when the heat in Andalusia reaches its peak, many people seek relief by the sea. However, in the mountains of the province of Málaga, there is an alternative to the beach— a unique hiking trail that offers not only breathtaking views but also the chance to cool off in the fresh waters of mountain streams. This route, winding through gorges and pine forests, has become one of the most popular destinations for active recreation.

The trail is located in the heart of the Serranía de Ronda mountain range, within the Sierra Bermeja, between the municipalities of Jubrique and Genalguacil. It is a circular route of moderate difficulty, about five kilometers long. What makes it special is that part of the path goes directly along the bed of the Arroyo del Quejigo stream, requiring hikers to be prepared for semi-aquatic sections. The trail takes you through a series of natural pools and small waterfalls, offering a true immersion in the wild.

The main attractions along the route are natural pools known as “charcos.” One of the first encountered is Charco de la Estacas—a true oasis with emerald-hued water, surrounded by rocky walls and dense pine forest. The trail then leads to the Enchanted Pool (Charco Encantado), where a fallen pine trunk spanning the water creates an incredibly photogenic scene. The journey continues to the Square Pool (Charco Cuadrado) and ends at the María Teodora pool (poza de María Teodora), famed for its vertical waterfall and local legends. Each of these stops offers a chance to take a break and swim in crystal-clear water.

Proper preparation is essential for a safe and comfortable experience on this route. Experts strongly recommend wearing hiking boots with good grip and ankle support, as wet rocks can be extremely slippery. Ordinary flip-flops or water shoes are not suitable for this hike. It’s also advisable to bring a waterproof bag to protect electronic devices and a set of dry clothes to change into after the water section.

The best time to visit this route is from spring to late summer. During these months, the stream’s water level is ideal for swimming, and nature is at its most stunning. This hike offers a great opportunity to combine exercise, adventure, and relaxation while discovering one of the most beautiful and refreshing spots in the province of Málaga.
