Madrid to Open Largest Electric Charging Station with 20 Ultra-Fast Points

The heart of Madrid will soon see an energy revolution: a station for hundreds of electric vehicles, new technologies and ambitious urban transformations await metropolitan drivers

Construction has begun in the Spanish capital on a one-of-a-kind ultra-fast charging site for electric cars and trucks. The new facility on Castellana will deliver record-breaking power and will operate exclusively on renewable energy

In the coming years, Madrid will see infrastructure that will transform the rhythm of city life and business. In the north of the city, in the Castellana area, construction will begin on the largest fast-charging station for electric cars and trucks within the M-30 ring road. This project will not only increase the number of charging points—it will set a new standard for the entire country, featuring 20 powerful charging units, each designed to meet the latest requirements of transportation.

According to Autobild, the site will cover over 1,200 square meters and operate entirely on energy from renewable sources. The station’s total capacity will reach 4,000 kW, making it possible to serve passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and even large trucks up to 12 meters in length simultaneously. For owners of electric motorcycles and light electric vehicles, a dedicated area will offer rapid battery swapping.

Technology and ecology

Special attention has been paid not only to power but also to the ecological impact of the facility. Semi-transparent solar panels will be installed on the roof, capable of generating more than 35,000 kWh of extra energy each year. The station’s facade will be built with photocatalytic materials that can purify the air from harmful impurities. This approach not only reduces emissions but also makes the station an integral part of the urban ecosystem.

Regional authorities emphasize that the chosen location—next to the business district and Chamartín Clara Campoamor station—is no coincidence. Thousands of cars pass through here every day, and the new station is expected to make life easier for those who work or live in this area. In addition, the project includes the revitalization of a previously abandoned site, which will have a positive impact on the city’s image.

Impact on the market and transportation

The opening of such a station is an important milestone for all of Spain, where electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular. According to russpain, China is already seeing a surge in electric car sales, and similar projects in Europe are a response to new market challenges. Madrid already has several fast charging stations, but the new site on Castellana will be the largest and most advanced in the region.

The station is designed for heavy use: 19 charging units of 400 kW for passenger cars and a separate area for heavy vehicles. This will help reduce wait times and speed up the charging process, which is especially important for commercial carriers and delivery services. Motorcyclists and owners of light electric vehicles will benefit from an innovative quick battery swap system, significantly saving time.

Innovation and support

In recent years, Madrid has been actively investing in the development of electric transportation. In addition to new charging stations, the city has introduced modular units for rapid battery replacement, which can be installed in just three days. This technology, supported by government programs, enables a full electric vehicle charge in five minutes—faster than filling up with gasoline.

Regional authorities note that such projects not only improve the environment but also make the city more attractive for businesses and residents. There are already more than 32,000 charging points operating in Madrid, and the number of government-supported electric vehicles has surpassed 37,000. The new station will be another step toward maintaining the capital’s leadership in sustainable mobility.

Acciona, the company responsible for construction, is renowned for its projects in renewable energy and infrastructure. It develops facilities throughout Spain and beyond, implementing innovative solutions for the cities of the future. In Madrid, Acciona has already contributed to creating environmentally friendly transport systems and continues to advance new initiatives related to green energy and smart city development.
