At Cabrils’ Hotel d’Entitats, Yolanda Uriz’s installation turns plant reactions and soil vibrations into sound and aromas. Visitors can experience it today and tomorrow.
Chemical reactions in plants and vibrations travelling through the soil feed a device at the centre of Yolanda Uriz’s project. Her installation is at the Hotel d’Entitats in Cabrils today from 18:00 to 21:00 and tomorrow from 10:00 to 14:00.
Environmental sensors feed the work, which combines sound with aromas. It is free and open to all ages. Two international DJs, Orascius and Mar Marea, are due to take part this afternoon. A bar service will also be available.
Narratives volàtils has taken shape through separate research and production stages. Uriz spent a week at Espai de Marge in Font-rubí from 24 to 30 August researching the work. She then moved to Can Bonamic in Sant Esteve de Palautordera, where she developed and produced the artistic concept from 14 to 20 September.
This week’s Sottobosco residency is the technical stage. Uriz is now materialising the project and installing the work. She was selected through the joint ResidènciesenXarxa call, promoted by Xarxaprod.
Sottobosco began last year with work on plant communication. Sarabiotic invited visitors on a sound walk in the natural surroundings of the Hotel d’Entitats. In 2023, Ferran Lega developed Thymus Vulgaris, which turns biodata from a thyme flowerbed into sound.
Plant signals have also found their way into gaming. At last weekend’s SAGA Barcelona Game Fest, Roquekes and Culoextremo used plants’ electrical impulses to generate musical notes. Synthesizers converted those notes into movements in Street Fighter II.
Chiara Signorelli directs Sottobosco, whose aim is to connect people with nature through interactive digital art. Cabrils Town Council supports the programme and provided the venue. Support also comes from Fàbrica de Creació Fabra i Coats and Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC). Xarxaprod joined this year, connecting the programme with other Catalan arts spaces. RUSSPAIN has also reported on early diabetes screening in Spain.
