Two Injured in Calamoch Fire Remain in Serious Condition. Two men injured in the fire at the old Calamoch station remain in serious condition in the hospital. One of them is being prepared for transfer out of intensive care. The Civil Guard is investigating the cause of the fire.
In Calamocha, two men who suffered serious injuries as a result of a fire on the grounds of the former railway station remain in critical condition in the intensive care unit at Miguel Servet Hospital in Zaragoza. According to Aragon authorities, one of the injured is expected to be transferred to a regular ward today, while the other remains under medical supervision in intensive care.
The fire broke out on Monday around 6:00 p.m. in one of the abandoned residential spaces at the old station. As deputy mayor of Calamocha Sonia Palacio clarified, the fire was first noticed by a municipal employee, who immediately called a colleague and notified the fire department about the incident. By the time rescuers arrived, both men were already outside showing signs of smoke inhalation and burns.
The injured, both 58 years old, were first taken to the local medical center and then urgently airlifted to Miguel Servet Hospital due to the severity of their condition. One of them was intubated, while the other did not require mechanical ventilation, but doctors were considering the possibility of surgical intervention from plastic surgeons.
Firefighters carried out extinguishing and ventilation work on the third floor of the building, preventing the fire from spreading to other apartments. According to Sonia Palacio, the exact length of time the men had been living in the building is unknown, although one of them had lived in Calamocha for a long time.
The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by the Civil Guard. Abandoned sites, like the old station in Calamocha, often become temporary shelters for people without permanent housing, increasing the risk of such incidents. In Spain, several hundred fires in abandoned buildings are recorded every year, and regional authorities regularly remind the public of the need to monitor such properties. Miguel Servet Hospital is considered one of the largest in Aragon and specializes in treating severe burns and poisonings.
