Four members of a family from Valladolid, including teenagers aged 17 and 14, died on Sunday afternoon, 5 July, in a crash on the A-67 near Herrera de Pisuerga, Palencia. A nine-year-old girl was left in very serious condition. The victims were two adults aged 48 and 45, and the two teenagers. They were travelling home when their car left the road and overturned several times, coming to rest in the basic reservation.
The Guardia Civil is investigating possible driver drowsiness. Witnesses described the car drifting to the right and entering another lane. It then veered sharply left before overturning. That sequence is consistent with a loss of control, but the investigation is ongoing and fatigue has not been established as the cause. The Subdelegation of the Government in Palencia said no other vehicle was involved.
The collision occurred at about 16:20. Firefighters from Herrera de Pisuerga worked to free people trapped in the wreckage. Medical teams attended, and a helicopter was sent to the scene. The Guardia Civil partially closed the motorway, later reopening one lane to traffic. The crash disrupted travel on the route as emergency crews responded.
The incident comes amid persistently high road casualties in Spain. Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) figures for 2025 recorded 1,775 road deaths, ten fewer than in 2024. They also recorded 103,591 crashes involving injuries, while 9,888 people required hospital admission. DGT-related figures counted 478.6 million long-distance journeys on interurban roads, up 3.4% year on year. These national totals provide context for road safety, but do not establish the cause of an individual collision.
Distraction was identified in 444 fatal crashes in 2025, representing 32% of the total, information from DGT-related reporting.
