At 8:54 on Wednesday, an AVE train travelling from Madrid to Seville collided with an Iryo service ahead of it at Urda in Toledo. The crash, on the Madrid-Seville high-speed corridor, derailed trains and interrupted traffic on the Madrid-Andalusia line. Renfe said its AVE service had left Madrid Puerta de Atocha at 8:00 a.m. and was scheduled to reach Seville Santa Justa at 10:39 a.m.; it placed the collision between Los Yébenes and Urda. Iberia has capped fares to and from Andalusia in response to the rail accident.
Castilla-La Mancha government spokesperson Esther Padilla reported that one train carried 146 passengers and a baby, while the other carried 397. Early reports put the death toll at at least 30, with around 100 injured. Transport Minister Óscar Puente said the railway control system near Urda failed before the collision: six trains had been stopped, and one was allowed to restart and travelled about 25 kilometres before striking a stationary train. He described the sequence as "inexplicable"; Adif was investigating the precise chain of events.
Tickets cost no more than €99 per journey in economy or €149 in Business through Sunday, 8 November 2026. The cap applies to all Iberia flights with an origin or destination in Andalusia. The airline is also allowing passengers to change disrupted journeys. They can call 900 111 500 to arrange changes.
Iberia increased capacity on the Madrid routes by 20% for Wednesday, adding more than 520 seats in total. Madrid-Malaga flights gained 362 seats, while Madrid-Seville services gained 158. The airline switched both routes to Airbus A321 aircraft.
The fare ceiling addresses travel disruption. It is separate from the wider affordability pressures discussed in an ECB housing assessment.
Iberia says it is working to add further capacity in the coming days. Renfe activated its Plan for Assistance to Victims of Railway Accidents and Their Families, and offered free changes and cancellations to passengers affected by the line closure. Its assistance line for passengers and relatives is 900 10 10 20. Castilla-La Mancha’s 112 emergency service has opened a separate line at 900 122 112. Renfe also cancelled trains from Madrid Atocha towards the southern corridor.
