Apple Intelligence can now edit images inside Fotos. iOS 27 removes objects, expands backgrounds and shifts a photo's viewpoint after it has been taken.
A photo no longer has to stay within the limits or viewpoint it had when it was taken. With iOS 27, Apple has added three Apple Intelligence tools to Fotos. They can remove objects, create space beyond the original frame and simulate a different viewpoint. Apple Newsroom says the approach keeps the original moment intact instead of replacing the photo wholesale.
The change matters because the work now happens inside Apple's own photo app. Users do not need specialist software. Borrador, Extender and Reencuadre use different kinds of image generation, but they serve the same practical purpose: changing a scene while keeping as much of the original image as possible.
Apple also expanded Image Playground beyond its earlier visual formats, adding broader styles that include photorealistic images. The feature is separate from the three Photos editing tools but belongs to the same wider Apple Intelligence image ecosystem.
Apple began rolling out iOS 27 on 14 September 2026. Apple and independent technology publications reported availability across 14 and 15 September. The company presented intelligent photo editing as one of the main additions to Apple Intelligence across its apps. Access still depends on the iPhone model, language and region.
Borrador removes distractions
Borrador is the most familiar of the three tools. It can erase people, objects and other unwanted elements, then rebuild the space they occupied. Apple says it can now handle larger subjects and more complex backgrounds more naturally. Tom's Guide also says the upgraded Clean Up is better at removing larger objects than the earlier version.
Apple’s official description presents these features as additions to the standard Photos editing workflow, not as a separate professional application. Independent coverage from Tom’s Guide notes that Extend generates the missing parts of a frame, while Spatial Reframing changes the apparent viewpoint after the photograph has been taken.
To use it, open a picture in Fotos and tap Editar. Go to Herramientas and choose Borrador. Tap the unwanted element, circle it or paint over it with a finger. In some cases, Fotos spots possible removals on its own and highlights them. Review the result generated by Apple Intelligence, then tap Listo.
The tool has Automático, Rápido and Alta calidad processing. Alta calidad may need an extra step before the final result appears. If the reconstruction fails, the edit can be undone during the session. A saved image can also be reopened in Borrador and returned to its earlier state with Restablecer.
Extender creates missing space
Extender tackles a common framing problem: a subject has too little room around it. Apple Intelligence does more than enlarge the picture. It studies the visible scene and creates new pixels beyond the original edges. The feature can add space around a person, change the aspect ratio or help straighten a tilted horizon without cutting away important parts of the image.
Open the image, tap Editar, enter Herramientas and select Extender. Pinch or drag the photo to set the amount of new area. You can adjust the frame if the image also needs a crop. Tap Extender to create the missing sections, then choose Listo. The added content does not come from the original file. It is generated from the visual information already in the image.
That makes the tool useful for holiday photos whose composition feels cramped. Edited travel imagery also raises questions about how people present and manage journeys after the event, much like the protection concerns described in this travel insurance report.
Reencuadre changes the viewpoint
Reencuadre Espacial goes beyond a normal crop. It lets users drag the image and simulate a different position from which the scene was photographed. Two fingers can move, enlarge, reduce or rotate the view before Reencuadrar processes it.
Apple says the system leaves untouched the parts that do not need changes. It creates new material only where the shift in perspective leaves empty areas. The steps are simple: open the photo, choose Editar, enter Herramientas, select Reencuadre, adjust the view and tap Reencuadrar. Users can compare the original and modified versions before saving.
Limited hardware support
These functions are not available on every iPhone that can install iOS 27. Apple Intelligence in iOS 27 supports iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and compatible iPhone 16 or later models. A supported language is also required, and Spanish is included. Availability may vary by country, region and language.
Apple also warns that some Apple Intelligence features rely on server-processed models and may have daily usage limits. Some intelligent photo-editing functions can therefore be restricted even when a device meets the hardware requirements.
Apple plans to attach information that identifies images created or edited with its AI tools. The company has also announced compatibility with SynthID during 2026 for much of the modified photography, although coverage will depend on the type of edit. That is a sensible step. iOS 27 makes Fotos a powerful editor, but generated parts of an image should remain identifiable instead of being mistaken for untouched reality.
