Three killed in van and truck accident in Huesca. A van and a truck collided on the A-1223 highway near Ilche. Three people died and another three were injured. The road is closed and emergency services are working at the scene.
A serious accident occurred in the morning on the A-1223 highway between Monzón and Poleñino, in the municipality of Ilche (province of Huesca). A van carrying six passengers collided with a truck, resulting in three fatalities and three others suffering injuries of varying severity. According to RUSSPAIN, two of the deceased—men aged 65 and 75 from Mequinenza (Zaragoza)—died at the scene. Their bodies were taken to the Huesca hospital for forensic examination.
The third fatality, a 56-year-old man also from Mequinenza, was hospitalized in critical condition but later died from his injuries. Among the injured are two men, aged 62 and 65, who are in serious condition, and the 47-year-old van driver from Zaragoza, who sustained only minor injuries. All the wounded were quickly transported to the Barbastro hospital by the 061 emergency medical team.
The accident happened around 8:45 a.m. at the ninth kilometer of the A-1223 highway, heading downhill. After the crash, traffic on the road was completely blocked, with vehicles being rerouted to the A-22 highway and the N-240 national road. Road police patrols from Binéfar and Barbastro, accident investigation specialists, firefighters, paramedics, and road maintenance crews are working at the scene. The causes of the collision are currently being investigated by the accident investigation unit (EIS) of the Huesca Civil Guard.
Similar tragedies on the region's roads are not unprecedented: recently, a fatal collision involving a van also occurred on the A-2 highway in Catalonia, as reported in the article about two dead and four injured. Such incidents once again raise concerns about safety on regional roads and the need to strengthen oversight of freight traffic.
For reference: the A-1223 highway connects several localities in the province of Huesca and is often used for transporting goods between Zaragoza and the eastern areas of Aragon. According to road authorities, the section near Ilche is considered one of the busiest, especially in the morning hours. Regional authorities regularly remind drivers to observe speed limits and to be attentive on such routes, where oncoming traffic and limited visibility can lead to serious consequences.
