Nerja’s breast cancer awareness march crossed the town and ended at the José Bobadilla Álvarez Pavilion with a solidarity paella. Its manifesto called for more research, stronger early detection and treatment and care tailored to patients.

Nerja’s breast cancer awareness programme ran from 19 to 25 October 2026, culminating on Sunday with a solidarity march from the Balcón de Europa to the Pabellón Deportivo José Bobadilla Álvarez. The route ended at the pavilion, where participants could enjoy a communal paella after walking through the town.

Earlier, the day began at noon at the Balcón de Europa with the reading of a manifesto from the Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer (AECC). The Ayuntamiento has adhered to it. Under the slogan “Nos lo tomamos a pecho”, the AECC campaign calls for humane, integrated care tailored to women with breast cancer and their families. Its demands cover the patient pathway throughout treatment, calling for clear information and emotional support, with patients involved in decisions about their care. The manifesto also urges continued research and equitable access to early detection. It calls for support resources and improvements to treatment and healthcare.

The week’s programme paired awareness activities with exercise, with performances also scheduled before the march. The campaign’s focus on early detection comes amid increased screening activity across Andalucía. The regional programme performed 249,859 mammograms between January and June 2026, 11% more than in the same period of 2025, and detected 629 carcinomas, according to Junta de Andalucía health councillor Antonio Sanz. In Málaga province, 49,957 mammograms were carried out in the first half of 2026, compared with 45,477 a year earlier.

Andalucía recorded 7,983 new breast cancer diagnoses in 2025, about 31% of the 25,374 cancers recorded among women in the region. The screening programme carried out 421,000 mammograms that year and detected 1,879 breast cancers through screening.

RUSSPAIN has also covered public gatherings elsewhere, including its Maó rally report.

People of all ages joined the route. Mayor José Alberto Armijo praised Nerja’s commitment to the cause and congratulated the AECC de Nerja and the Concejalía de Salud on the week’s programme, which ended with the march.
