Ibex 35 Holds 19,000 Points Amid Japan Rate Hike. The Spanish Ibex 35 index is trying to stay above the 19,000-point mark. The Bank of Japan's decision to raise rates to their highest level in 30 years has increased market tension. Issues surrounding oil and transit through Hormuz add further uncertainty.

The Spanish stock index Ibex 35 is struggling for the second consecutive day to hold the 19,000-point mark. As El País notes, yesterday the index surpassed this psychological threshold for the first time, but today its momentum has slowed. The reason is several factors impacting global markets.

The key event was the Bank of Japan's decision to raise its base interest rate to 1%. This is the highest level since 1995. Although this move was expected, it has increased investor caution and heightened interest in the outcome of the upcoming US Federal Reserve meeting. Last week, the European Central Bank implemented a similar tightening of its policy.

Additional pressure on the markets came from the situation in the oil market. After a sharp drop in Brent crude prices to $83 per barrel, quotes stabilized but remained at their lowest levels since the start of the conflict in Iran. Yesterday's surge on exchanges was linked to news of a US-Iran agreement to resume transit through the Strait of Hormuz. However, today investors are faced with uncertainty over the details of the deal and shipping companies' demands for security guarantees.

Despite lower inflation expectations due to cheaper oil, rate hikes in Japan and Europe continue to keep markets tense. Traders are closely monitoring further decisions from global central banks, which could affect borrowing costs and the performance of stock indexes.

For reference: The Ibex 35 is the main index of the Spanish stock exchange, reflecting the performance of the country's largest companies. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important route for global oil trade. Decisions by the Bank of Japan and the European Central Bank often set the tone for global financial markets. The stability of the Ibex 35 is crucial for assessing the state of the Spanish economy and investor sentiment.
