Tesla has taken a clear lead in Spain’s electric car market this September. The Model 3 and Model Y together account for more than two thousand new registrations, leaving other brands well behind.
In the first half of September, Tesla set a pace that left the rest of Spain’s electric car market trailing. The Model 3 alone reached 1,589 registrations by mid-month, far outpacing every other model and signaling a sharp shift in the market.
The Model Y added another 638 units, bringing Tesla’s total to 2,227 registrations in just fifteen days. No other brand comes close. Toyota’s C-HR, the next in line, managed 170 registrations, while BYD’s Dolphin Surf followed with 150. These figures, based on DGT data up to September 15 and reported by Google/SpainAuto, show Tesla not just leading, but dominating the field.
According to independent industry data, BYD led Spain's BEV market for January–August 2026 with 11,943 registrations, while Tesla was second with 9,745.
Chinese brands are making progress, but the gap is still wide. BYD placed three models in the top ten—Dolphin Surf, ATTO 3 EVO, and ATTO 2. Leapmotor’s B10 and B05 also made the list. Still, none are close to Tesla’s numbers. The Leapmotor B10 reached 124 registrations, and the Kia EV3, the top Korean entry, had 121. Deepal’s S05 rounded out the top ten with 92 units.
Further down, established European brands like Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, and Renault appear in the rankings, but each has fewer than 85 registrations for their leading electric models. The Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ had 84, the Volvo EX30 had 75, and the Renault Twingo E-Tech Electric had 74. The spread among European brands stands in contrast to Tesla’s concentrated surge.
Tesla’s lead is not just large—it’s striking. The Model 3’s numbers suggest a delivery push early in the month, with a high volume of cars registered in a short time. Whether this pace will continue through September is unclear, but the current gap is already notable for Spain.
Independent data aggregators confirm that the Tesla Model 3 was Spain's top-selling BEV model in September 2025, with 1,976 new registrations that month. For 2026, Spanish industry sources estimate 5,945 Model 3 registrations so far, underscoring its continued popularity.
Chinese manufacturers are steadily gaining ground. BYD and Leapmotor have placed several models among Spain’s most registered electrics, a trend that could change the lower and mid-tier segments if it continues. Still, the data up to September 15 is provisional, and the final monthly numbers will show whether these shifts are lasting or just a temporary result of delivery schedules.
Spain’s electric vehicle market has seen surges before, but never with such a clear lead by one brand. As reported earlier, infrastructure and charging access remain important for wider adoption, especially as more brands enter the market.
With Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y leading, and Chinese brands increasing their presence, Spain’s electric car market is changing quickly. The current numbers suggest that delivery timing, brand momentum, and pricing are all in play. If Tesla keeps up this pace through the end of the month, it will strengthen its position and push competitors to rethink their strategies in Spain’s fast-moving electric car market.
