The US has changed its approach to military presence in Europe: Donald Trump announced the deployment of 5,000 additional American troops to Poland, despite recent statements about reducing the contingent. The decision marked an unexpected turn amid previously outlined plans to withdraw some forces from Germany and to reassess the US role in NATO.
In his message on the Truth platform, Trump emphasized that the deployment of soldiers is connected to his personal relationship with Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki. He noted that he supported Nawrocki in the election and now considers it important to strengthen military cooperation with Warsaw. According to Trump, Poland remains a “model ally” for the US in the region.
Earlier, the Trump administration announced the withdrawal of about 5,000 American troops from Germany, explaining this as a return to pre-war deployment levels and dissatisfaction with the position of European NATO partners. In particular, the decision to reduce troops followed criticism from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding US actions in the Middle East and the conflict with Iran.
In recent weeks, Washington has also warned Spain and Italy about a possible reduction of military presence due to their refusal to provide bases for a joint US-Israel operation against Iran. Against this backdrop, US Vice President J.D. Vance stated that the planned deployment of troops to Poland had been suspended, while the Pentagon officially confirmed a temporary delay in the deployment and a reduction in the number of combat brigades in Europe.
However, just a day after the Pentagon's statement, Trump reversed his position, announcing an additional military contingent for Poland. The Pentagon clarified that the final deployment of forces would depend on the analysis of strategic and operational needs, as well as the capabilities of allies. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth met with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to discuss maintaining a sufficient level of American presence in the country.
The Polish authorities, in turn, assured that the number of American troops on their territory would not decrease. Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized that Warsaw is working to increase both the size and capabilities of the American military contingent. According to RUSSPAIN, such changes in US military policy are also drawing interest in other European countries, where security and alliance commitments remain the subject of sharp debate. In the context of European disputes over military bases, it is worth recalling that similar conflicts over strategic facilities have already arisen, for example, in Extremadura, where local socialists opposed the closure of the Almaraz nuclear power plant.
