At its Landaben plant, Volkswagen Navarra has begun production of the ID Cross, putting Spain at the center of Volkswagen’s electric vehicle strategy. The historic facility has built more than ten million vehicles over six decades. Now, it is manufacturing an all-electric Volkswagen model for the first time.
The ID Cross marks a strategic shift for Volkswagen Navarra. The plant now makes four models for two brands, with both electric and combustion powertrains: the electric ID Cross and Škoda Epiq, plus the combustion-engine Volkswagen T-Cross and Taigo. That mix tests the factory’s ability to adapt during rapid technological change.
Volkswagen Navarra plans to produce 24,300 ID Cross units between September and the end of 2026, Noticias de Navarra reported.
The new electric SUV joins Brand Group Core’s urban EV lineup, which is intended to make electric mobility more accessible across Europe. The range comprises four models: Volkswagen ID Polo and ID Cross, along with Škoda Epiq and CUPRA Raval. They are produced on the Iberian Peninsula and represent three brands. The first ID Cross built at Landaben comes in Life trim and has a 155 kW (211 hp) electric motor. It is finished in Verde Nori. Its first destination is Germany, one of 34 European markets set to receive the model.
Turning Landaben into an electric vehicle hub has meant a major investment in workforce training. More than 290,000 hours have gone into electrification processes. Volkswagen is training employees to keep the plant competitive within the group’s European network, while it balances electric and combustion models during the transition.
The ID Cross enters the fast-growing urban electric SUV segment and strengthens Volkswagen Navarra’s place in the group’s Iberian production strategy. The company plans to raise output gradually at its plants in Pamplona, Martorell, and Palmela, with the combined total aimed at more than one million vehicles.
Before production began, Navarra authorities launched a training program for 1,050 people to support the region’s move into electric vehicle manufacturing. The effort reflects a broader shift in the workforce.
