SpaceX Goes Public: Largest IPO and a New Record for Musk. SpaceX has listed its shares on the stock exchange for the first time. The company aims to raise $75 billion and set a historic record. If the share price holds, Elon Musk’s fortune could exceed $1 trillion.
SpaceX has conducted its first public offering, opening trading on the stock exchange and immediately setting a new record for funds raised. The company expects to secure $75 billion, considerably surpassing the previous record set by Saudi Aramco in 2019. If the initial share price remains at $135, SpaceX's market capitalization will approach $1.8 trillion, and Elon Musk's fortune—who controls more than 80% of the company—could exceed $1 trillion for the first time in history.
Ahead of the IPO, attention focused not only on the scale of the deal but also on changes in the rules of major stock indices. In particular, the Nasdaq-100 accelerated SpaceX’s inclusion in the index—now requiring only 15 trading days instead of the standard period. This triggered concerns among some politicians and investors: U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren warned of the risk of “forcing” SpaceX into passive investment funds. The S&P 500 refused to alter its rules for the accelerated inclusion of new companies.
Despite the hype surrounding the offering, SpaceX's financial performance remains under pressure: the company closed last year and the first quarter of this year with losses. Nevertheless, management emphasizes long-term goals and does not focus on short-term results. Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX's chief operating officer, noted that the company is focused on development rather than quarterly reports. Musk maintains near-total control of management thanks to enhanced voting rights, allowing him to control up to 85% of the votes.
SpaceX includes projects such as Starlink and xAI, further increasing investor interest. However, analysts warn of a possible overvaluation of the company and high stock volatility following the start of trading. Over the next year, demand for the shares will be tested in phases — restrictions on selling stock for early investors will be lifted gradually.
For reference: SpaceX is one of NASA's key contractors for rocket launches and the construction of space infrastructure. The company is actively developing the Starlink satellite internet and is investing in artificial intelligence through xAI. As of 2026, Elon Musk remains the world's richest person, with his wealth mainly coming from stakes in Tesla and SpaceX. The previous largest IPO in history belonged to Saudi Aramco ($25.6 billion). If SpaceX stock prices decline or the value of Tesla assets falls, Musk's achievement of the trillion-dollar mark could be postponed.
