Lewis Hamilton secured second place on the grid for the Barcelona Grand Prix, showing his best qualifying result since joining Ferrari. He was just 0.064 seconds behind George Russell of Mercedes. This breakthrough became possible after Ferrari brought a major aerodynamic upgrade to Spain, and Hamilton managed to overturn an unsuccessful training streak.
At the start of the weekend, Hamilton gave up his car to young driver Dino Beganovic, and then struggled to find the right pace. After the third practice session, he even left the paddock to reset himself and returned to qualifying with a new attitude. According to him, this move helped him focus and get the most out of the car. Ferrari engineers made targeted changes to the setup, allowing the Briton to reach the leaders' level for the first time in a long while.
Last season, Hamilton struggled to compete with Charles Leclerc, despite some individual successes such as a sprint in China and a pole in one of the races. However, this year his form has noticeably improved: in Monaco he finished third, and in Barcelona, for the first time driving for Ferrari, he was so close to pole position. The driver himself noted that the team is making progress, but Mercedes still maintains the advantage, despite all of Ferrari’s upgrades.
At Mercedes, George Russell reclaimed the top spot after a series of unsuccessful rounds in Miami, Canada, and Monaco. His gap from Kimi Antonelli in the championship is largely due to technical problems and controversial penalties. In Spain, Russell changed his approach with the engineers, which allowed him to consistently stay among the leaders throughout the weekend. According to him, the main achievement was not only pole position, but also regaining confidence in himself and the car.
Charles Leclerc, Hamilton's teammate at Ferrari, was unable to realize the car's potential: on his first fast lap he lost control exiting turn four and hit the barrier. Leclerc himself admitted he made a mistake despite posting good speed in previous sessions. Hamilton explained that at this part of the track, both Ferrari drivers were pushing to the limit, but only he managed to avoid an accident.
Ahead of the race, teams are concerned about high tire wear: according to Hamilton, degradation turned out to be twice as high as expected, which may lead to at least two pit stops. Despite closing in on Mercedes in qualifying, Ferrari faces the challenge of maintaining pace over a long distance. Hamilton expressed hope that the team can contend for victory, but acknowledged that Mercedes remains the favorite for now.
