Festivities in Ayna, a small town in Albacete, came to an abrupt halt after a 64-year-old woman was killed during the first bull run of the local patronal festival. She was outside the protective barriers and in the bull’s path when it struck her. Medical teams responded quickly and a helicopter was dispatched, but her injuries were too severe. She died before reaching the helipad.
The woman had traveled from Catalonia to visit family in the Sierra del Segura area. The incident happened on a section of the route known as Las Cuevas. Ayna’s mayor, Juan Ángel Martínez, said she was standing near the barrier when the bull charged and hit her. Video shared on social media shows her moving against the animals’ direction, a reminder of the risks for anyone outside the designated safety zones.
Emergency services were alerted at 10:55 a.m. and sent a medical helicopter to the scene. On-site health workers tried to stabilize her, but her wounds were fatal. In a separate incident during the same event, another bull gored a man in his sixties in the arm at a different point along the route. He survived and received treatment.
The town hall suspended all scheduled activities for the day, including those honoring Nuestra Señora Santa María de lo Alto. The festival was due to run until September 8 and is now continuing in a subdued atmosphere as residents and visitors come to terms with what happened. The mayor confirmed the decision to halt festivities and acknowledged its impact on the community.
