Where in Spain Drivers Are Most Frequently Fined – Latest Regional Data

Spain has recorded an increase in the number of traffic fines. Regional trends are being analyzed. New patterns in traffic violations have emerged. Up-to-date figures for 2024 are provided.

In 2024, Spain has seen a significant increase in the number of fines for traffic violations. According to data collected by the motorists’ association, this year has set a record both in the number of issued citations and the amount of revenue generated from fines.

Analysts have identified several key changes in the structure of violations. The largest increase was recorded in the use of visual devices while driving—these cases rose by 55.7% compared to the previous year. Speeding detected by mobile radars ranked second in terms of growth, with a 22.3% increase in such incidents. Unlawful stops and parking violations took third place, showing an 18.4% rise.

At the same time, some types of violations have become less common. For example, the number of fines for running a red light dropped by 22.5%. There was also a 5.8% decrease in citations for operating vehicles with faulty or expired technical inspections. Fixed speed cameras also recorded fewer speeding violations, down by 2.5%.

The distribution of fines across the autonomous communities shows significant differences. Andalusia leads in the number of recorded violations, with 1,425,521 cases. It is followed by Madrid (657,070), the Valencian Community (581,044), Castile and León (572,830), and Castile-La Mancha (459,917). Galicia registered 433,157 fines, Aragón 251,741, the Canary Islands 214,825, and the Balearic Islands 153,552. The lowest numbers were recorded in Ceuta (5,439) and Melilla (3,775).

Looking at the regional dynamics, the highest increase in fines was recorded in Rioja, where the figure rose by 64.4% compared to 2023. In Aragón, the growth reached 26%, and in Andalusia — 12.9%. On the other hand, Cantabria saw a decrease of 36.1% in the number of fines. In Asturias, the drop was 14.6%, and in Extremadura — 9.7%.

Experts note that these changes are due both to increased road controls and to shifts in driver behavior. Overall, the 2024 statistics reflect new trends in road safety and efforts to reduce the number of accidents on Spanish roads.
