Fernando Alonso Soon to Become a Father: Who Are His Parents

A Racer’s Dream Comes True: Who His Parents Were and What They Did

Fernando Alonso is about to become a father for the first time. His partner, Melissa Jiménez, is expecting a child. The racing driver’s family is eagerly awaiting the new addition.

In March 2025, the family of renowned racing driver Fernando Alonso is expecting a new addition. His partner, sports journalist Melissa Jiménez, will give birth to their first child together. The news has been a major event for those close to the driver—especially his parents, José Luis Alonso and Ana María Díaz, who will become grandparents for the first time, and his sister Lorena, who will take on the role of aunt. The couple’s relationship, which began in spring 2023, developed away from the public eye, but now their love story is set for a happy new chapter.

For Melissa Jiménez, this baby will be her fourth child. She already has three children—Gala, Abril, and Max—from her previous marriage to footballer Marc Bartra. For Fernando, however, fatherhood has long been a cherished dream. In a 2024 interview, he admitted that starting a family was a personal goal for the coming years. People close to him say the driver has always been very devoted to his family and dreamed of having a child with whom he could build the same warm and trusting bond that he shares with his own father.

Undoubtedly, the key figure in Fernando Alonso’s life and career is his father, José Luis. Though a demolition expert by profession, he became his son’s mentor, mechanic, and manager all at once. He was the one who introduced the future champion to motorsport. Interestingly, José Luis built his first go-kart for his daughter Lorena, who is six years older than Fernando. But one day, a young Fernando took the wheel, and his father immediately spotted his talent. The family had to make serious sacrifices, with a significant portion of their income going toward karting. The driver himself has repeatedly expressed deep gratitude, saying his father instilled essential values in him and taught him to appreciate what he had, and that the greatest reward for him was always seeing his father’s happy face after a race.

No less important in the athlete’s life is his mother, Ana María Díaz. A native of Asturias, she worked for many years at the El Corte Inglés department store in Oviedo. She is known as an excellent homemaker and a pillar of support for her son. Although Fernando has mentioned that their relationship wasn’t always easy when he was a child, over time they managed to overcome their differences and build a close bond. Ana María, the daughter of the driver’s beloved grandmother María Luisa Martínez López—to whom he dedicated his first Formula 1 victory—is now part of his closest inner circle.

In addition to his parents, Fernando has always found support in his older sister, Lorena. She chose a completely different path, earning a medical degree and becoming a doctor in their hometown of Oviedo. Lorena has always backed her brother and attended important milestones in his life, such as the opening of his personal museum in Asturias. Soon, she will take on a new and joyful role—that of an aunt.

Incidentally, Fernando Alonso Díaz is one of the most decorated and respected drivers in motorsport history. He was born on July 29, 1981, in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias. Throughout his remarkable career, he became a two-time Formula 1 World Champion in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. Known for his character and roots, he earned the nickname “El Nano.” Alonso has raced for top teams including McLaren, Ferrari, and Aston Martin, and is rightly regarded as one of the greatest drivers of his generation.
