Natural Pools and Waterfalls of the Pedras River in Galicia: The Perfect Spot for a Summer Getaway Near Santiago

El paraíso oculto de Galicia: ¿dónde encontrar aguas cristalinas y antiguas leyendas?

Just an hour’s drive from Santiago de Compostela lies a unique destination: a cascade of natural pools with crystal-clear water. Discover the route along the Pedras River, which combines hiking, breathtaking scenery, and ancient Galician legends. A perfect plan for a summer day.

At the height of summer, when many seek relief from the heat on crowded beaches, Galicia offers a unique alternative. Less than an hour’s drive from Santiago de Compostela lies a hidden natural treasure — a cascade of natural pools and waterfalls, perfect for a refreshing swim surrounded by untouched nature.

This is the famous pools of the Río Pedras (Pozas del Río Pedras), located in the municipality of A Pobra do Caramiñal, in the heart of the Serra do Barbanza mountains. Over centuries, the river has carved picturesque pools into the rocks, creating a series of seven natural basins open to visitors. The trail along the river is more than just a walk — it’s a real adventure, appreciated by both hiking enthusiasts and photography lovers.

A journey along this route is an immersion not only in nature but also in history. Along the way, travelers encounter old water mills, remnants of an ancient Roman road, and the picturesque puente de San Xoán de A Misarela, where the San Xoán and Barbanza rivers meet. These elements of cultural heritage are seamlessly woven into the natural landscape, making the walk even more captivating.

This place is also shrouded in many legends passed down from generation to generation. One of the most famous stories says that Saint Amaro (San Amaro), fleeing from the mythical creatures known as “mouros”, blocked the riverbed with stones to slow them down. According to legend, this is how the river got its name—Pedras, which means “stones”. Another tale is linked to one of the deepest pools, known as the Black Well (Pozo Negro). Locals believe that it has no bottom and that mysterious creatures dwell in its dark waters.

It should be noted that the trail is of medium to high difficulty, so good physical fitness and sturdy, comfortable footwear are recommended. However, all the effort pays off. The final pool along the route offers travelers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Ría de Arousa estuary, making the ascent worthwhile.

You can reach this natural park from Santiago de Compostela in about 50 minutes via the AP-9 and AG-11 highways. Thanks to its scenic beauty, historical heritage, and rich folklore, the pools of the Pedras River have become one of the most attractive and refreshing summer destinations in Galicia.
