19-year-old goalkeeper Javi Navarro named in Real Madrid squad after penalty shootout heroics

A new goalkeeper debuts in Madrid: Fran González's injury opens the door

Javi Navarro, 19, became a Youth League hero by saving five penalties. Due to an injury to Fran González, he has been included in Real Madrid’s squad for the first time for the La Liga match against Alavés.

Madrid is preparing for an unexpected change in its goalkeeper lineup: 19-year-old Javi Navarro, who recently became a Youth League hero, has been included for the first time in Real Madrid’s squad for the La Liga match against Alavés. The reason is an injury sustained by Fran González during training the day before. Now Navarro, who until recently played for the youth teams, may make his debut in the country’s top championship.

Attention to the young goalkeeper was drawn by his impressive performances in Switzerland: at the Stade de la Tuilière in Lausanne, he twice emerged victorious from penalty shootouts, saving a total of five shots. This result allowed Real Madrid’s youth team to win the title and brought Navarro into the spotlight for both the club and its fans. Today, he will appear with the team at the Santiago Bernabéu to celebrate the Youth League victory, but he will remain available for the first team’s match against Alavés.

Madrid’s goalkeeping lineup is currently facing staffing issues: in addition to the injured Fran González, Thibaut Courtois is also sidelined. Lunin and Sergio Mestre have also been included in the squad for the upcoming match. For Navarro, this is not his first experience with the first team: he has already been on the bench for three Champions League matches (against Almaty, Olympiacos, and Bayern) and the Copa del Rey match against Talavera, but has yet to play.

Navarro joined the Real Madrid system from Adarve, having grown up in the Barrio del Pilar district. Early in his career, he remained overshadowed by other goalkeepers, but his success in the Youth League has changed his status. Now he alternates between Juvenil A, Real Madrid C, Castilla, and call-ups to the first team. At the club, his potential is noted, and they believe the Youth League was a turning point for him.

The situation with young footballers and their unexpected opportunities in big clubs is nothing new for Spanish football. For example, the media recently focused on the story of the son of a legendary player, who also found himself in the spotlight after a long period out of view — you can read more about this in the article about the recognition of Maradona’s son in Italy.
