In 2025, Blackstone announced one of the largest technology projects in Spain. In the municipality of Calatorao, located in the province of Zaragoza, construction will begin on a major campus consisting of eight data centers. The total investment amounts to 11.8 billion euros, making this one of the largest projects in the region’s history.
The project, named Rhodes, will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will start in the second quarter of 2026 and involves the construction of the main infrastructure facilities. At this stage, 1,200 new jobs are expected to be created. Once operational, an additional 200 permanent positions will be added for the maintenance and management of the data centers.
The second phase includes the campus expansion and the potential addition of logistics functions. After all work is completed by 2035, the total number of jobs associated with the project will reach 2,128. Of these, 578 will be in construction, while more than 150 will be permanent positions for campus operations.
The campus will cover an area of 223 hectares near the A-2 highway. For accessibility, two entrances are planned. The project includes the construction of a dedicated 650-megawatt electrical substation, along with both overhead and underground power lines. The complex will be connected to the municipal water supply system.
The campus’s internal infrastructure includes green spaces, parking areas, public zones, and additional services for staff and visitors. The municipality of Calatorao is expected to receive revenues of €127 million from the implementation of the project.
The implementation of this large-scale project strengthens Aragon’s position as one of the key centers for digital infrastructure development in Spain. While Madrid and Barcelona continue to lead in total installed capacity, the region is becoming increasingly attractive to major international investors and data center operators.
In recent years, other major data storage and processing projects have also been launched in Aragon. Companies such as Azora, Amazon, AWS, and Microsoft have joined Blackstone’s initiatives. According to analysts, these investments have increased the region’s future data center capacity by 24%.
Experts note that developing such projects not only creates new jobs but also drives the region’s technological advancement, attracting highly qualified specialists and stimulating the growth of related industries.
