On Monday afternoon, an incident occurred on the railway near San Fernando de Henares: one of the commuter train’s carriages derailed. Six passengers suffered minor injuries as a result, but serious consequences were avoided.
The train, running between Guadalajara and Madrid’s Chamartín station, lost stability near a station. The last of its five carriages went off the rails, but thanks to a swift evacuation no one was in danger. Ambulance teams and firefighters arrived promptly at the scene, ensuring safety and providing first aid to the injured. Four passengers received assistance on site, while two women were taken to hospital for additional check-ups—their condition is considered mild.
City authorities and transport company representatives immediately began investigating the circumstances of the incident. The mayor of San Fernando de Henares personally visited the scene to ensure there were no serious consequences for residents or passengers. According to initial reports, there was no threat to people’s lives or health, but the cause of the derailment remains unclear.
Traffic restrictions and support measures
After the accident, train service in the area was completely halted in both directions. This affected several popular routes at once: the C-2, C-7, and C-8 lines, which connect Guadalajara, Madrid, and other cities in the region. Passengers were forced to transfer to buses, which were urgently arranged to run between Guadalajara and San Fernando de Henares. Additionally, on some railway sections, trains now terminate their routes early to prevent crowding near the site of the incident.
The region’s transport services, including the metro, increased the number of trains and staff at the busiest stations. Bus routes connecting the capital with the suburbs were also reinforced to minimize inconvenience for residents and visitors. Authorities assured that they are doing everything possible to restore normal service quickly and ensure passenger safety.
Authorities’ Response and Investigation
The incident sparked a strong response from members of the regional government. Transport officials appealed to central authorities, demanding greater attention to the state of the railway infrastructure and passenger safety. In their view, incidents like this must not happen again, and additional measures are needed to modernize and monitor the condition of tracks and rolling stock.
Currently, specialists from transport companies and relevant agencies are conducting a technical inspection of the section where the derailment occurred. At the same time, they are analyzing the performance of all safety systems and the technical condition of the train.
